Same here with Sosa and McGwire, but ultimately I put Sosa in over McGwire.
Sosa without PED is a .270 25-30 HR pretty fast player with erratic D and a strong arm. I would not give him a second thought- or McGwire.
Bagwell is one of my favorite all time players and I am strongly in the camp he cheated but without showing up in any lists even though he admitted he didn't think it was wrong if the 25th player took them to make a roster and have a career; or his personal trainer was a noted roid guy who I think may have gotten busted at one time.
I like Crime Dog but put him in the Lofton category- close but no cigar.
Trammell and Raines are so borderline with me the wind could knock them in but I'd need to study comparables- Trammell is a SS and a great leader but unlike Larkin and Ozzie Smith who I knew were HOF Im not sure with this guy which may be an indictment.
Agreed that it's better than locking him up long term. Of course the irony is that he's going to have a monster year, right?
They want to slot him over at first, and I just don't feel all that confident in him making that transition easily.
Yeah playing 1B fulltime will definitely be te test for him, health aside of course. And hey if h has a monster year and walks, the Sox will get a draft pick more than likely.

People just assuming he's going to slide right over are insane. It may not be the most demanding position defensively, but he's still played far fewer games at the spot than Ortiz has...

Are you suggesting we should play Ortiz full-time at 1b, or just pointing that out? Sure Napoli isn't going to be a Gold Glover, but even if he's poor over there it's not exactly our top concern.
Getting a 1 year deal here is a huge win. They have no better options on themarket, he's a way better option than any in-house option, and like you said, if it turns out he's a liability and/or his offense isn't enough to justify his money or his slot, you lose next to nothing as this team isn't a WS contender anyway.
This is a huge win for the Sox. Now if they can just reduce Victorino's deal to 1 week we're back in business.

Just pointing it out. Agreed about SV though. That deal was terrible.
Happy to see the deal get done with Napoli; and even happier that it's a one year deal for less money. Would like to see them do a little more for depth, but overall I don't dislike the team. A few other names that still intrigue me (for depth purposes) are Casey Kotchman and Scott Podsednik. Kotchman could platoon with Napoli at first, with Napoli getting some starts behind the plate as needed as well. Podsednik pushes Nava & Kalish down the depth chart for the inevitable Ellsbury DL stint; would have preferred they re-upped Ross and had Gomes as the 4th outfielder.
Also, still wish they would get another pitcher so they don't have to count on Lackey for anything. Colby Lewis is intriguing for the right price.
The issue with Napoli's hip is that it is apparently a ticking time bomb. It could go out at anytime, be that this year or 5 years down the road. Signing him for a year was a great move.
Mike morse is a FA after this season. They had interest in trading for him, so you never know.
Morse isn't an option, now, after the 3 team deal w/ OAK/SEA, remember DIDN'T we target LaRoche before he was extended, had we signed LaRoche, Morse would've been the Nats 1B....
