They won't be good. It's a secret. The Sox plan to tear their UCL's before opening day.

Shhhh....don't tell anyone.

Don't worry. It will still be a sell out. Just ignore the mostly empty seats and realize that someone still bought them. Yea for moral victories!

Exactly!

Furthermore, don't buy seats. LSCII is the ultimate talent evaluator and he says the roster is terrible. And who would know more than him? Certainly not the team who won two World Series in the last 8 years, that's for sure!

So take it from LSCII...you're being duped. These guys have no idea what they're doing.

Peter Gammons said that the Red Sox want Mauer so bad, they offered to take all of his contract.

Can't lie Joe Mauer is a guy I like. But if we are taking the whole contract I wouldn't trade a ton for him.

You and me both. Respect the way he plays. And he'd be a lot of fun here. But to take ALL of his contract? No me gusta.

Not my money, not my problem. Getting an elite player (and such a likeable guy) like him would go along in repairing the Red Sox image.

In the field, you could divide time evenly between Napoli and Mauer at 1B and C.

Would cost a lot though. Probably a combo of 2 of our 3 big names.

Minnesota would burn down if the Twins traded Mauer...it would certainly be a ballsy move by them...trading the hometown boy/face of the franchise for probably what would amount to mainly salary relief.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: #Mariners have discussed three-year deals with Hamilton in range of $20M to $25M per season.

I don't even want Hamilton but I'd take him on a three year deal. Give him 3 years, $75-80 million. If they can overpay Napoli and Victorino to get them on short term deals and aren't too worried about the money, why not Hamilton too?

Clearly they have lost their way, no doubt about it. After the WS win in 07, it became about a straight cash grab. Hard to argue with that if you're being even the least bit objective, BP.

Regardless of that, I think you're taking this discussion way too seriously. I like and respect you as a poster and I honestly mean no offense, so please don't take anything I've said in this thread personally. It's not meant as an attack on you or your support for the Sox. I just want them to be good, and I don't agree with how the FO has run things over the last few years. We may not agree on the moves they've made or how they've done business lately, and that's okay.

Even Texas said they weren't going beyond 4 on him....I don;t think he is going to get anything too long term from anyone....although it only takes one crazy owner to decide he wants him bad.

If the Mariners get him for that money, and the Sox don't, I'll be angry. The guy instantly helps our lineup.

#redsox are very unlikely on hamilton. #mariners, however, are said "real" players for JH

So they give 2 decent players 13 mil each for 3 years, why not give Hamilton 20 for 4?

They said the same thing about Crawford last year. Nobody expected us to get him.

I'm hoping Ben pulls it off

I think you're getting me wrong too. I've been tongue-in-cheek the whole way. In fact, I feel the same way you do in most ways, but I think you are just taking things too far.

This franchise has become a bit salesy for my liking, no question. Their baseball acumen can be questioned with recent signings that look like PR attempts more than baseball moves (see Lackey and Crawford in particular), also no question. However, as much as they are often too focused on the "business", this doesn't mean they ought to go in the opposite direction, and this is where we differ.

If 2011 and 2012 happened in 2009/2010, they'd have already signed Hamilton to an 8-year deal with a NTC (would have been Chiarelli's suggestion!). And you can't act like they're going to go with a youth movement as a viable option when their current youth sucks, and they have sponsors, season ticket holders and corporations that essentially mandate they "give it the old college try" if nothing else. Now you might not like the idea of fielding a team that is not likely to win anything at the expense of playing a few kids, but that route is not an option in this town anymore. It's just not. They couldn't do that anymore than the Yankees could. And they're not trying to "fool" fans with the likes of Napoli and Victorino, they're trying to responsibly improve their short-term roster without destroying their chances to load up for 2014/2015 and beyond, and it's complicated by the fact they have a lot of needs and there are few quality free agents this season.

So yeah it sucks they have a ton of money to spend and nobody worth it right now, but the option to sock it away isn't viable. So to me, spending it on short-term deals for decent clubhouse guys who will improve the current roster and maybe allow them to be competitive until July when they might be able to actually acquire a real difference-maker or two..that seems like a fair strategy to me. I'm on board with it. I think crucifying them at this point is unfair, that's all.

And I'm not apologizing for these guys or excusing past mistakes, I think I'm just acknowledging the realities of their situation.

The guy instantly helps every lineup.

Clearly the Red Sox don't like his makeup for Boston if they don't match a 3 year 75 million dollar deal.

not a big fan of our lineup, but would feel better with a SS who could actually hit.
