Ambient/Chill Out Music Thread

When I'm at work, I don't typically listen to music with extensive lyrics as it puts me off when I'm trying to write something.

So I got into ambient awhile ago. The scene probably peaked in the 90s to early 2000s when Cafe del Mar was a household name, but it's still going.

Might not all be classified as "ambient", and more like "trance", but I'm not into extensive definitional debates.

Anyway, I find it relaxing when I'm working long hours.

Here's a top 10 of sorts:

Aphex Twin is my staple for ambient music.

Air was the first band that came to mind. I started getting into the ambient/chill out music during school, makes for great background music for studying without being distracting.

Great thread. Here are some of my favourites:

I've been listening to this genre for the last 10 years as well, whenever I'm working on papers or studying. Fantastic stuff. Lately, I've been listening to mixes on Songza (they have several mixes) or Symmetry Sounds.com

Eno, Aphex Twin, and Boards of Canada are the first two things that come up in my head when I think of ambient music.

The Future Sound of London - Lifeforms album is something that's worth a listen

Oneohtrix Point Never is another, anything from Replica and R Plus Seven which came out this year.

I haven't listened to all of it but some of Julia Holter's from Loud City Song has some tracks.

As far as chillout goes, it doesn't get any better than this:

Tim Hecker's Analog Paralysis and In the Fog I are on my playlists. Good stuff.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Stress Waves. Boom

I'd say so. Zero 7 is in this thread and some consider them trip hop.

Really good thread. Excited to check out some of the suggestions next time I'm "chilling out". Forgive me if I overstep the genre slightly.

God himself said that The Durutti Column is really good music to chill to.

Always useful for an afternoon cram session right before an exam when you don't want to focus on the music but want something in the background.

My favorite ambient music to have in the background/helping me focus on work is Brian Eno's "Thursday Afternoon".

My favorite ambient album period, which is also great for this, is Brian Eno's "Ambient 4: On Land"

I actually don't find rhythm/beat distracting though, only melody-- Great rhythm can actually get you working on a groove.

My favorite band/track to work along to is "Hallogallo" by Neu!, and just Neu! in general.

Pretty Lights
Michal Menert
Emancipator
Sigur Ros
Yndi Halda

Minus the Bear is slightly more rockish, but still great chill music.

All excellent. Trip-hop is my favorite to relax to.

I give you....Yellow Bird.

Hammock are amazing for this. Everyone should at least give them a listen. Raising Your Voice...Trying to Stop an Echo is one of the best ambient albums ever made.

4-5 years ago I would've been all over this thread. I was obsessed with downtempo/chill/ambient/lo-fi/trip hop... and that's alll I would listen to. www.di.fm had/has a really good lounge channel if you wanna know. I have nothing else to add except that Pathaan, Zero 7 and Thievery Corporation are some of the best, and my favourite artists of all time, and always will be. This genre has a special place in my heart. Opened the doors to a ton of fantastic new, I would even say life changing music for me. Cheers, and keep on chillin.
