Scottish Football 2014/15

Since I always felt weird about bumping the last thread and since The Best Team in The World Ever open their European qualifying tonight somewhere where more fish will be watching than humans, I figured why not make a thread.

And for the scoffing that seems to occur re: Scottish football on this board (not bitter, honest) I think the game here is in a good bit of health for the season ahead. Two years ago the demise and demotion of Rangers spelled ARMAGEDDON for the game (since disproven) in Scotland, and now things are looking up. Reduced money has led to less foreign players in the game meaning more homegrown players can flourish, seen in the success of teams like Motherwell, Aberdeen, Dundee United and St. Johnstone last season and with Partick Thistle and Hamilton to a lesser extent. Ryan Gauld became the most expensive Scottish teenager ever when he moved to Sporting Lisbon last week and as one of the few actual footballers to have come out of the country in recent years this bodes well. Consider that his former Dundee United team-mate Andy Robertson is 20 and already has two full caps for the national team, well.

The national team is also on a high with the past 18 months under Gordon Strachan leading to actual on-pitch success with wins over Croatia in the World Cup qualifiers which has confidence high going into the Euro 2016 qualifiers with the first match away to Germany, which will no doubt end in hilarious disaster.

Elsewhere beyond the top flight and the national team we see the two Edinburgh teams and Rangers in the Championship (nice originality in naming these divisions) with only one guaranteed promotion spot between them. Rangers carry on their proud historical tradition of spending money they don't have on players they don't need to obliterate competition several tiers below them (it's funny because you don't know if this 'historical tradition' goes back two or twenty years), Hearts have seemingly put their financial ruin behind them and can start fresh with a legitimate plan in place and Hibs, well, who knows. They were honking last year but it seems things might be different going by their pre-season and, well, one of them has to win it.

So, if you fancy slumming it from one of the BIG LEAGUES you can find out stuff about Scottish football here. The SPFL youtube has lots of videos and highlights that I'll post here as the season goes on.

Here's the best parts of last season presented by a man with a hilarious voice:

Meanwhile however, Aberdeen have won their first European qualifier against some diddy team, and Celtic's opening qualifier is tonight, away to KR Reykjavik (I spelled that right on the first go). New manager Ronny Deila is paying his lip service to fans already, claiming they are a Big Club and their three potential qualifying rounds are "stupid" http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28307088

"It's very unfair that going to the last 16, as we did two years ago, is not going to be recognised.

"But it's a problem in every small country. We maybe have one good team but the other ones are dragging that team down."

Any Celtic fans still claiming they are relevant in Europe or that this hiring was a cheap one will lap up the "dragging that team down" line very nicely, oblivious to the fact that Celtic & Rangers' dominance was often funded on hoovering up the talent of the smaller clubs at very small fees. Anyway. Game is tonight at 8PM and is live on the BBC, if anyone is inclined.

The first division (championship) will be more interesting than the premier league.

Hearts, Hibs and Rangers fighting for promotion.

Celtic haven't signed a single player so far this summer have they?

Edit: I forgot they brought Craig Gordon back from whatever planet he's been hiding on. That's it though, isn't it?

Gordon had been out of football for two years while his knee was rebuilt.

And the count for diddy teams in Europe qualifying goes to 2 in terms of success with Celtic winning 1-0 on a sclaffed deflection from a youth product. Lovely.

Three posts hit for Celtic but this game was dire. It'll be a while before I'm over the World Cup being finished

That shot from Commons in the first half would have made some goal.

Success! St. Johnstone look to build on last season's defeat of Rosenborg and draw 1-1 away to FC Luzern of Switzerland in their first leg qualifier. At half time Motherwell are 2-1 up at home to some Icelandic team and Aberdeen 0-0 with FC Groningen of Holland.

Aberdeen-Groningen ends 0-0

Motherwell concede an equaliser from the penalty spot in the 90th minute, because of course they do.

Ed - whoops. Oh well, all draws in the first leg for the Europa League qualifiers, not so bad. All still with a chance in the second leg, it would seem.

Motherwell (as per usual when it comes to Europe) are useless.

It seemed to be going well for Motherwell in this game. Their knockout competition record under McCall is quite shoddy though, especially given their league places at the same time.

Assorted draws for the next round of European qualifiers has happened which allows us to judge their suitability for teams based on "have I heard of them or not?"

Aberdeen's potential opponents: Real Sociedad (screwed)
St. Johnstone's potential opponents: FC Zestafoni of Georgia or FC Spartak Trnava of Slovakia (easy)
Motherwell's potential opponents: JK Nomme Kalju of Estonia or Lech Poznan of Poland. (won't get through anyway)

Celtic will face will face Legia Warsaw or St Patrick's Athletic so they should be okay.

Celtic v St.Pats.

That'd be a big game for St.Pats.

St.Johnstone are the most likely to go through those.

Pukki gets a hard time when really he's played well every time he's got the chance barring a run of games after he first joined the club.

I actually was bemused by a lot of the Pukki hate last season. He seemed to have a decent goals return even for someone who seemed visibly shaken by the speed/physicality of the game.
