I certainly agree with that thought. My comment was somewhat tongue in cheek but Gibson has played quite well, last year and this, in the CHL prior to his WJC performance.

Yeah, he certainly looks good so far. But we won't really know what we have until he makes the pros. Justin Pogge had a couple of very solid junior years along with an even better WJC performance than Gibson and he didn't pan out at all. Goalies are much harder to predict than skaters.

One thing I might suggest, that worked out well for the Bolts. And that is try looking hard at the undrafteds coming out of the juniors and colleges. In 2010 the Bolts inked Cory Conacher and Tyler Johnson to AHL contracts. Conacher scored 39 goals for the Ads last season and Johnson had 31 goals and 37 assists. Both based on these performances got NHL contracts.

You can find some real diamonds for cheap this way. From what I've seen of the Duck's scouts, they are pretty good talent evaluators. Turn them loose on these types of players.
Sorry, didn't mean that to sound like there will be no assistance, just that if Al is expecting us to move hell and high water to recreate last year's team this year, it isn't happening.

Remember that our Stanley Cup winning team was loaded with undrafted free agents, so we know how valuable they can be. Got my eye on Zengerle this year.

Update on Lindholm from Eric Stephens.

@icemancometh @DucksFanZone Not hearing that's he coming to camp. At last check, he's getting closer to returning.

Long Term

Exit, thanks for the response. I agree, I don't expect the Ducks to be able to build a replica of last year's team in Norfolk this year. In fact I would think it almost impossible to replicate last year's team anyway. Just way too many stars aligning and good luck.

What happened was that for about the last 3 years the Bolts had accumulated a number of draft picks, usually by being sellers at the trade deadline and poor finishes. Last year and the year before last you start seeing those guys filter into Norfolk.

Then you add the undrafteds like Conacher and Johnson you have a good young nucleus of players.

The Bolts then added veterans like Mike Angelidis, Trevor Smith who were not expensive but added experience and mentoring to those young players.

So what I was suggesting was that the Ducks look around after the camps are over this season and see if there are any reasonably priced vets out there. There will be holes to fill in Norfolk as I see at least 3 going up to stay.

The undrafteds you start looking at this Summer after the draft is over. And you look at those mid level priced vets next Fall to fill out the team.

And hopefully we see improvement in Norfolk. But I know it will not happen overnight. At minimum it will take a couple a seasons. But what I want to see is that commitment to finding and developing good prospects in a winning environment.

Andersen in net.

Looks like Wagner is still injured. I wouldn't expect him or Lindholm to make an appearance at camp. He was long shot at this point, so no big deal.

Vatanen is also out with injury, I think.

Injuries could well be an issue with Vatanen, when you consider his size and position. There just isn't as much time and space, and a smart coach is going to want his players to play hard on Sami.

That too. That can be detrimental. Self-preservation is important for longevity. Taylor Hall is an example of that. Plays the game without fear, and gets rocked as a result.

For an undersized player it's necessary.

Sounds like most of the teams pulled their guys tonight. I think we're using this game to evaluate.

Isn`t Scotty the only coach on the ice in Anaheim?
That could very well mean that Bruce is back there and evaluating the boys tonight

He was the only one out there because he wasn't technically a coach at that time.

They may have to depending on injuries at this point. Ducks seems to be scrambling for enough bodies to ice a team right now.

Norfolk is expecting to lose 4 to 7 guys when camp opens. That's just for camp, not graduations.
