#1 Overall in 2013

Who will be the #1 overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in New Jersey.

Note: Because of the lockout, the draft order will probably be determined completely randomly (each team has an equil 1/30 chance of getting the top spot). See 2005 draft

The 2005 draft was not completely random.

Wut.

Not every team has an equal chance at picking #1. They didn't in 2005 either.

Actually, teams that have made the playoffs more often or had a previous first overall pick are less likely than other teams to be drawn.

Also, I'm surprised you didn't put Barkov on, he's probably the next challenger after Mackinnon/Jones.

only 7 teams will have 3 balls in the draft lottery
2 teams will have 2 balls and everyone else (21 teams) will have 1 ball in the draft based off the 2005 set up.

I don't remember who counted as what tbh but there's always a chance someone drops big, jumps high. It's random but it's still better odds for bad teams.

Anyway I picked MacKinnon. Seems like in recent years, the forward always seems to go #1 while the D-man drop (Larsson, Murray, Hedman, etc.) despite them being arguably close.

zero chance its Sean Monahan ... Barkov has a legitimate shot but I can't see anyone passing on MacKinnon unless its EDM and maybe Minnesota

Monahan might not end up in the top 5

also, we have no clue what the rules will be like for the draft if there isn't a season. It could be the 3/2/1 ping pong ball system like the previous lockout draft but the league could make an entire new formula.

It's a shame to have a poll without Barkov in it....and Drouin (since some experts say that he had a chance too)

I voted for MacKinnon

its more likely that a team would trade out of #1 for a crop of assets than to not draft him. Whomever that gets #1 and doesn't want Mackinnon would be wise to accept the ransom given

No idea.

I think it depends on team, it doesn't seem 100% clear cut just yet.

For instance, if Oilers pick #1 I couldn't see them passing on Jones.

Jonathon Drouin will cement it by year's end. If he's not first he's definitely second.

The top 3 are clearly MacKinnon, Jones and Barkov-in that order. The next 10 or so guys are all really good, but frustratingly they are all pretty close together.

Monahan is a great player, but Barkov has been spectacular this season and should be the third name over him FWIW.

Depends who has the first pick.. but I'd say the most likely player to be picked first is McKinnon.. I do find it strange that Monahan is named in the poll while Barkov is now, although I guess it's not so important since my choice would stay the same anyway

Keep dreaming!!!!!!

as great of a prospect Drouin is, he is still the #4, possibly could become #2 but highly unlikely with Seth and Barkov in the same draft year

I honestly don't see how you put him ahead of Barkov and Jones. Seth will be picked in the top 4, should go top 3 no question.

MacKinnon's speed makes him the clear cut #1 to me and that he will be NHL ready, Drouin should go back to Halifax next year. I have only seen Mack once in action when he was playing for Shattuck and it's truly unfair that I rate him over another prospect that I haven't seen skate before, if not weekly for an accurate assessment but there is a reason he is mocked and considered the #1 by everyone closer to the game than myself. The only other name being mentioned as a potential #1 is Seth.

random note- Mack and Barkov have very late birthdays. Very minor factor but who knows if that would ever be the straw that breaks the camels back for a GM that can't decide.

I would put it out like this now

Chances to be drafted 1# in the 2013 draft: IMO

Mackinnon 40% - For a top 3 he is 100%. Highly thought to go #1, but there is a chance that Barkov or Jones will go 1 on draft day if they can shine the rest of the season.

Jones 30%
Barkov 25%

I dont see them dropping really, atleast Jones. Barkov might drop to #4 or #5 but thats also unlikely. Both have a chance to go 1 if they can keep on impressing and make great plays.

Monahan / Lindholm / Drouin : 5 %

Realistically i dont see anyone from these guys rising all the way to 1, i see them going on the 4-8 picks. Drouin might have a small chance to rise potentially to the #3 spot, but to do that he needs to pass either Barkov or Jones wich is very unlikely.

Columbus has 5 (3 of their own plus LA and NYR).

They still have no chance. ...

Drouin will at least go #3, over Barkov and Monahan. When it gets down to splitting hairs, scouts will go for the flashier player, with the more offensive upside.

MacKinnon is an incredible skater, but Drouin is a great skater too in his own way. Second best skater in the mix for sure.

Drouin is pretty much great at everything; great skater, great hands, great shot, great playmaking, great IQ... and when I say great, I mean off-the-charts great. You don't find skillsets like that too often in prospects. His scoring rate is also off the charts and he has the best .PPG in the CHL.

I think if he's selected to the WJC, he'll be in the top 3 discussion around the time the tournament is over.

Drouin continues to be underrated. He'll be a Patrick Kane/Claude Giroux type star with the hands he's got on him. Can't see him not succeeding with his level of talent.

I think it will be MacKinnon but I guess it all depends which team selects at #1 overall. I could see a few teams going for Jones
