What happened to Bure in 2001-02?

First 56 games with Florida, only 22 goals after scoring 117 goals in 156 games over the previous two seasons.

Florida was brutal in both years, why the difference in production?

He left knee was basically toast. Had off-season surgery on it afterwards IIRC.

Yes, 2000-'01 was basically the last great season we saw of Bure, he turned 30 that year. Too bad.

Then of course he went 12-12-8-20 +9 after his deadline trade to the Rangers, so obviously he still had something left in the tank. He might have just been tired of losing at that point and stopped trying for Florida. Just wiki'ed it... he reinjured his knee during the 02-03 pre-season, then received another injury in December and never recovered adequately from the resulting surgery.

I'm not intimately familiar with the situation, but something to consider: if Florida had game-planned around his productivity for several years, they were likely sitting and waiting for him to break out, which is excruciating when dealing with a declining star. It's tough to draw the line and re-organize your whole game plan around different players, but also tough to keep losing and watching your stud struggle.

Whereas the Rangers had the benefit of a clean slate, with time to scout him and prepare for his addition to the club. So by the time he actually suited up, the coaching staff surely had their own brilliant plan for exploiting his remaining ability. It may have been as much a matter of X's and O's as anything.

Who knows what kind of magic they could have had together if both had been healthy...
