A captain is not just someone who leads by example, but also motivates and provides personal support for his teammates. And is someone they can rely on in any situation.
Getzlaf has lately been just one damn lazy bum. No effort, no fire, just stupid penalties and barking on the ice.
While Ovechkin is not what he used to be you can see the frustration in his face and he still try to give everything it just don't work like it used to. Getzlaf looks like he doesn't give a damn anymore.
I don't think Ovechkin has many leadership skills and he does complain a bit, but he's a guy who's always trying so hard out there to make things happen and absolutely loves the game. And of course, incredibly talented and leads by example.
Getzlaf is a smart guy who's also very talented and strikes me as a guy who can keep a locker room cool. But you can definitively notice that sometimes, he'll take shifts off. That's not something a captain should ever do.

Although I'm not a ducks fan, I watch them a lot. You can often point out Getzlaf as the laziest player on the ice, especially when they aren't playing great. He looks like he's not even trying, just surfing around waiting for the game to end. Don't get me wrong, he's a superb talent and one of the best centers in the league when he's playing his game but you'd expect the captain to lead by example, especially when his team is not playing great.
Ovechkin might not be the best captain either, but I'm going with him.
For those saying Getz is lazy, you must not have watched him much last season. He put in a great deal of effort...in the past I'd agree with that assessment of him though. He worked his butt off last season.
Neither guy is someone I'd want leading my team into battle. However, Ovechkin is the better player, so I'd rather have him on my team over Getzlaf, even if that means slapping a 'C' on him.

I did watch a lot of them, and he was still lazy. And what is even worse is that he was also pretty terrible.

He had some terrible luck and wasn't on top of his game but last year might have been the hardest I've seen Getzlaf work. One of the biggest myths around here is how lazy Getzlaf is. Most of the time he skates hard and he always finishes his checks, he does make some bad decisions with the puck that people attribute to laziness but it's not laziness, it's bad decision making.

I contribute to laziness when you dont even try to hustle a better spot to pass or shoot and you just throw the puck on teammates way that has zero chance to get through and it gets picked off, then casually stride down back to defend, or consistently waste good opportunities teammates make you by just making the easy decision.
