I don't want to say I can almost understand how ONE person does something stupid like this because I really can't, but seriously that was a crowd of people that let this happen on that kind of ice?

I'm glad someone had the sense to get that kid off the ice at least.

That was my first thought. Even if they were all to keep standing - why gather in clusters near the break? Especially the people who were just gawking, and not actually involved in the rescue.
