For what it's worth, the official IIHF roster of Latvia lists Blueger as being 6'1 and 185 pounds. That is two inches and 20 pounds more than what he was half a year ago. Either it's a typo, a cheat or he's had a recent growth spurt.

Wow, that's a huge difference, but that's the thing with inches anyways, it's not that accurate.

I do not know if it has been mentioned elsewhere, but Maatta is wearing an A for Finland.

Is it official or was it just for the exhibition game

I think it is official. It saw it in the Finnish thread for the WJC so I neglected to attache it. I can look and let you know here shortly.

Looks like Harrington might be moved to the first pairing w/ Hamilton for Canada. Not sure if they're just experimenting or not.

Also, for people who have twitter a really good follow for the WJC (and just in general) is Cory Pronman @coreypronman.

There was some talk on TSN after the game that the coaching staff was not impressed with the Rielly/Hamilton combo. Might be a smart move thorwing Harrington with DH to add some d on that unit

I think their reasoning is probably that Reilly and Hamilton both need the puck on their stick to be as effective as they can be, and to be able to play their game. Harrington is just a perfect guy to enable an offensive D-man to do their thing

I wasn't a fan of the Rielly/Hamilton pairing from the beginning, largely because it meant one of them would have to play a more safe, defensive role to allow the other guy to roam. A Hamilton/Harrington and a Rielly/Reinhart pairing allows one guy to roam, while the other guy plays safe defense.

Harrington played with DH during the super series as well (and looked good), so not a huge surprise they went back to that.

Maatta had an assist and Barkov had a goal and 2 assists in the Finland-USA game.

Harrington, again, looked fantastic defensively today in the pre-tourney vs. Sweden. Best defenseman on the ice. Canada had a parade to the penalty box for the 1st two periods, and Harrington and Binnington kept them in it.

Agreed. I thought he played a very sound game. I actually think he is trying to become more physically engaged. I know in an interview this summer thats something Hunter asked Harrington to work on

Harrington led Canada in ice time with 25:52 today, including a full 3 minutes on the 5 min overtime. Getting rave reviews over in the GDT, too.

And now that Girgensons isn't being allowed to go by Buffalo, Blueger is likely to be Latvia's #1 center for the tournament.

Thx. Kinda weak on Buffalos part no?

WJC is a pretty good experience for a player. I would think a bit better than a couple extra weeks in the AHL

The Sabres are just being stupid control freaks here IMO. First they move him from the USHL straight to the AHL at age 18 (instead of sending him to Kelowna) and now they refuse to let him play at the WJC because he'd miss 6 or 7 games while in Russia. Girgensons has 1 goal and 4 assists in 21 games for the Amerks. That will sure help him develop his offensive game that people questioned at the draft.

I think part of it is that the Amerks have a lot of injuries but if I was them I'd sign a few guys on PTO (or is it ATOs) and send Girgensons to WJC. They seem to be trying their best to screw up his development.

I think they should have let him go, but it's actually not stupid or surprising that they didn't let him go to the WHL. Going into the draft, consensus among many scouts/analysts was that this kid was near-NHL ready, and ready make the jump to the pros. I think going straight to the NHL was probably not realistic, but the AHL seemed very sensible. I don't think that will hurt his development at all.

Harrington?

He's that fraud that has no business being on Team Canada, right?

I think one year in the NCAA playing against men would have been the best step for him, the lockout has just made it harder for him to get AHL ice time.

Physically mature enough maybe. But you can't tell me he's learned everything he needs to know for the pro game playing in a Junior A league in Iowa. No way. And there were also questions about his offensive upside. Second-youngest player in the the AHL, 1 goal in 21 games for Rochester. This looks just like another case of an NHL franchise worried that they can't control every aspect of their prospect's development so they'd rather bury him on their own farm team than let him "get ruined by strangers". Not allowing him to attend the WJC just reinforces that. Call up ECHL guys or get some tryouts for these two weeks. And let one of your top prospects get some exposure and confidence playing against the best players of his age. It's just stupid the way they're handling him.

I'll never forget those WJC threads last season when Harrington made the team.
