Backes. While he has the lowest offensive ceiling out of the group, his defense is in another tier - even compared to Staal - and he's dropped 30 goals twice while being his team's best offensive and defensive forward.

Backes is pretty clearly the right answer here.. He drives the bus for St. Louis.

We'll see how Staal does in a more prominent role but I'm not expecting his offensive numbers to take off; he DID get a lot of minutes despite being a "#3 centre".

Krejci and Staal are hard to rank given their very different usage and abilities. Don't think it matters much who is 2nd/3rd out of the group.

plays over a minute more on the penalty kill, and about 30 seconds less on the power play.

its different getting lots of minutes when they are driven up by penalty kill time, instead of even strength or power play time.

last year stall played 15:25 a game on even strength, 2:38 a game penalty kill, 1:59 power play (best year to choose because he was mainly the 2nd line center last season)

krejci played 15:15 a game even strength, 0:43 penalty kill, 2:26 power play

backes played 15:47 a game even strength, 1:47 penalty kill, 2:24 power play.

Backes
Krejci/Staal

Personally I think Staal has the capabilities to put up 65 points next year which would put him over Krejci, but I can understand people taking the more offensively proven played in Krejci. Backes is the best of both Worlds.

Jordan Staal is not as good offensively as Backes. I don't know what could possibly cause you to think that. He had 50 points in 62 games (a 66 point pace), and a pace is just that - pace. Not actually doing it. There's a reason it's a lot more difficult to score 70 points than it is to score 43 points in 50 games.

He has also not been a "#3 center role" his entire career... In 2009-2010 (when Crosby and Malkin combined to miss just 16 games) he was 3rd on the team in even strength minutes per game.

The "#3 center" on a team doesn't finish with more minutes than all 4 top-6 wingers.

The year before that, Staal played 15:41 per game at even strength. He also got over 3 minutes per game on the powerplay. In fact:

2011-2012: 2nd
2010-2011: 2nd
2009-2010: 3rd
2008-2009: 3rd
2007-2008: 3rd
2006-2007: 7th

The last time Staal wasn't one of the 3 most used forwards at even strength was 2007! He's also gotten at least 90 seconds of powerplay time per game every year, usually over 2 minutes.

He was given plenty of opportunities throughout his tenure in Pittsburgh. The stigma that he was stuck playing behind 2 of the best players in the game is a false narrative that people make up. It's not true. Even when #87/#71 were both healthy Staal was leaned on heavily.

oh funny how when he's top 3 in forwards for even strength time, the 2 players in front of him are oh look at that crosby and malkin.

staal when crosby and malkin were healthy was leaned on heavily you are right, as a shut down center. so basically any time the ovechkins, spezza's, the richards, the carters, the lecavaliers, the stamkos's stepped onto the ice so did staal and his line of misfits.

and for someone that is so much better offensively then staal, backes only put up 4 more points in 20 more games.

staal gets power play minutes on one of the highest power play given teams in the league, but yet he still goes out onto the ice with the likes of tangradi, ponikaroski, fedotenko, sterling, kovalev (unlikely considering most of his games were in ottawa). a bunch of super stars there.
