Karlis Skrastins

I'm wondering why Karlis Skrastins didn't play in the overtime period against Edmonton Oilers. Against Nashville Predators he did it...
The reason why I write it is to ask you Dallas Stars fans if he is a 20 minutes player or shall he play less than 20 minutes in a hockey game? We have very good defensemen in our squad just like Robidas, Grossman, Nisskanen or Daley but I think that Skrastins isn't the 5th defenseman, or is he?
Just curious to know it...

Robidas is the de facto #1. After that it's pretty much determined by the individual game as to how much some players play. Niskanen, for example will play more in games with lots of PP, and Grossman/Skrastins will play more when there are lots of penalties to kill. As to why Skrastins didn't play in overtime...well he's not exactly a go-getter offensively.

So this made me go look at the toi from last game for the defenseman and I have to say I'm kind of surprised.
Grossman (ev)18:44, (pp)0:09, (sh)3:56, (toi)22:49
Skrastins (ev)13:50, (pp)0:06, (sh)4:05, (toi)18:01
Robidas (ev)16:59, (pp)3:48, (sh)3:41, (toi)24:28
Niskanen (ev)15:17, (pp)6:56, (sh)0:00, (toi)22:13
Daley (ev)18:02, (pp)2:33, (sh)3:32, (toi)24:07
Woywitka (ev)10:26, (pp)0:00, (sh)0:00, (toi)10:26

Niskanen didn't play on the pk at all. I understand he picked up alot more time on the pp but if he is to become a well rounded defenseman he has to kill penalties too. And if Woywitka's upside is that he is more offensive than Fistric why is he only playing 10 min and not at all on either the pp or the pk, at least Fistric could kill penalties.

I didn't realize he didn't until you mentioned it, but he has been on the first PK unit thus far, as he should be. I've been very impressed with his play, and I'm one who has always been a Skrastins fan.

Count me in as someone who was very excited to have him on the Stars too. I think he'll be a calming influence and a good veteran to have on D. His play so far has impressed me. I'm very surprised to see those ice time numbers though, I would think Skrastins wouldn't come in 5th for TOI.

Listening to the Morrow interview from Bad radio (which is pretty good) and his comments on Skrastins:
"he isn't great at one thing, but he is good at everything. His hockey sense is way above average, he's in position, he reads plays well. He puts himself in harms way to make the play."

It has to be said that Karlis has become a part of our no.1 "YOU DON'T SCORE NOW" unit. He's one of those guys who is just there to do his job well and nothing else.. I'm sure all of you were hoping him to be there when we were hanging in the 3-2 lead against the Ducks. At that point our D was Robidas - Goligoski with Benn on the right wing..

With everybody talking about Grossman being our(which of course is a major blow), I for one want Skrastins to join the team as soon as possible so that he can help the team into playoffs and beyond..

He's not that great but Woywitka makes him look like Lidstrom.

I read earlier today from a Latvian sport website a story about Karlis.. It said that he wants another year here with the Stars but if the team doesn't want to resign him, he'll move to KHL and to the Dynamo Riga..

"The two survivors are in a serious condition and have been taken to hospital. One of them is team member Aleksandr Galimov. The other is a flight engineer, preliminary reports say."

Wow...

Per TSN: Karel Rachunek, Josef Vasicek, Pavol Demitra, Ruslan Salei and Karlis Skrastins were among those killed...

It's official:
@Buccigross John Buccigross
Latvian officials confirmed the death of Latvian defenseman Karlis Skrastins.
7 minutes ago via web

I think we all knew it, but there's the confirmation. RIP Karlis. I'm glad we got to see him play the last two years of his career.
