Pulkkinen had 54 points in 55 games after his draft year. Is he back to where he started offensively?

Well, despite the points he wasn't really THAT good. Offense was good but he was nowhere the two-way player he is today and was not physically as strong. Back then he played on a line with the best goal scorer in the league(37g/59games) so that didn't hurt Teemu either.

I'd say simply confidence. He had a tough end to 2011-2012 and even though he had a very good summer it took him a while to get his confidence back. He's the type of player that lives off his offense and when he's not producing it hurts his confidence.

Next year will be huge for him and will probably determine whether he can play the NA game.

Highlights from the game, Pulkkinen assisted on the first and scored the second(also check out iFlip's deflection on the 4th goal):

You don't think he'll be in the AHL next year?

Pulks will be in GR next year. the red wings have already said that multiple time both him and Calle Jarnkrok will be givin a shot at the NHL in training camp(come play woth the big boys for a minute then go play with the kids in the AHL, Jarnkrok's the only one with a real shot) and if they don't make the big club then they will play in Grand Rapids

I'm sure he'll be there. What I mean is that next year we'll see how his style fits the smaller ice for a full season(not just a short WJC etc.).

at this point if Pulkkinen amounts to anything at all i'll be pleasantly surprised(seeing as how i've basically 100% given up on him over the last couple years)

What's the general consensus on Sproul so far? I know there are high hopes for him in the near future, but what's his timetable looking like? Will be be in Grand Rapids next year?

I could see him playing 2 full seasons in GR then being first call up his 3rd. He's racking up points in the OHL and people are generally high on him, seems like a good pick.

next year sure

he'll get some games in this year whenever his OHL team gets eliminated from the Playoffs even

while he does have a lot of potential don't expect him in the NHL anytime soon,he's got a lot of work to do

I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up spending 3 full years in the AHL

One final random thought for you today. Greyhounds defenseman Ryan Sproul has been held pointless only once in the last three months. #beast"

Now since that was posted, he has gone two games without a point. But even so, since returning from injury that makes only 3 of 20 games that he has not registered a point. 12 goals + 12 assists in that time frame.

Yeah, I don't expect any Wings prospect -- let alone a defenseman -- to make the NHL before at least their 22nd birthday...

Does his game lean more toward generating offense in general, or can he use that big frame in a shutdown role as well?

I think this is probably accurate...
However, when Babcock gets a look at a 6'3 Canadian defenseman, don't be surprised to see Sproul put on a fast track -- especially if Sproul works hard.

Right now, much more of an offensive defenseman, most definitely. He's quoted as saying his role model is Washington's Mike Green, and that is exactly the style he emulates.

Hopefully he rounds out his defensive game as well (I'm sure the Wings won't bring him up until he does) so that he can be a more complete player. You can't be that #1 NHL defenseman teams covet unless you are able to play well on both sides of the puck.

It was Lebda that was -3 in a 9-3 win or something right? Epic.

Sproul is the ultimate high potential but raw prospect. He'll definitely need some refining in the AHL, most likely the full 3 years before he gets a full time job in Detroit.

Ouellet on the other hand may have a very short time table. Decent NHL size, really polished and a high end prospect. He could even see call ups as early as next year over guys like Almquist

I see a Smith timeframe for Ouellet, except he'll make the jump to the pros a year earlier. But sure, you can never rule out call ups.

Ouellet will probably be like the Filppula plan, strikes me as a guy that once he gets called up he won't go anywhere, he is going to play his way straight onto the team pretty early. I think he will spend one year in the AHL and at some point in year two he will come up and that will be all she wrote on his non-nhl career. The first hickup with injuries and he just isn't going to go back down unless we somehow load the defense ridiculously in the next couple years which would seem impossible. Coaches trust him, he plays a NHL smart game, I think he will take a different track than some of the other guys because of that.

Right now he's definitely an offensive defenceman. Even with his big frame I don't think he will ever be considered a "Shutdown" guy. That being said, from the time he entered the OHL, he defensive game has improved leaps and bounds. He is also learning to use his size more effectively, especially along the boards.

I see Ouellet same way.

Sproul could go the "Smith" route, without this extra lockout half-season.
