bigger rinks, no obstruction, more suspensions/fines, and more!!!

How would the NHL fare if the rinks were european sized, no obstruction at all, automatic icing, more severe suspensions/fines on bad hits, etc?

First of all, I AM a fan of physicality. I love big hits, but I hate bad hits and think they should be removed from the game, if possible.

I think a bigger rink and all of the above would open up the game a lot for the pure talents out there: gaborik, ovechkin, semin, datsyuk, etc. There'd be more goals/game and the bigger power forward types wouldn't be as effective. Dmen who are slow wouldn't be that effective either and we'd slowly see a transition from big, strong players to faster and smaller players.

Hence, the league would lose their ability to shape games. With the hitting out of the way, the refs wouldn't be able to call penalties to turn the tide of a game and ultimately, teams with less pure talent would start to suffer. If the sunbelt teams couldn't put talent on the ice, they'd be no more.

What say you?

So, what you want to do is take physicality out of the game?

Ummmmmm, no thanks.

No that's not what I want to do. Bigger rinks would lend themselves to a less physical game I believe.

Hell, I want more physical play. Just make sure it's clean. If it's dirty, heavy fines and/or suspensions. But the more bodies banging and checking the better.

As interesting as a bigger rink sounds it would severely slow down the pace of the game. Players would hold on to the puck longer and it would take a longer time to get the puck up ice. Also, there is a greater probability that a play would get broken up in the neutral zone if the whole playing field is larger. I would much rather have a north-south game instead of each team passing it around in the other's zone for extended periods of time.

Exactly. That's what almost nobody wants.

If I want to watch hockey on a Euro-style rink, I'll just watch international hockey.

The day the NHL does that, I'm done as a fan. Simple as that.

It would make the talented players more effective which i would really prefer, but easier way to do that while keeping the league as physical as possible is actually to start calling penalties.

I like the physicality in the NHL. If I wanted to see hockey with bigger rinks and less physical play, I'd make an effort to watch international hockey.

The most I'd do is about an extra foot wide on each sides. Players have become much larger and I can a need for a bit more space. But international size? **** no...

Besides, it would never happen, shaving the most expensive seat's row? Right..... will go for that I'm sure

If the NHL went for bigger rinks will mean the end of the NHL. It's struggling already as it is in the United States, you widen the rink, you make it more boring, less people watch, screwed. Keep it the way it is. Don't widen the nets too.
