Injury Report: Gerbe had "spine" surgery in the summer

He was just on ch2 during the sports talking about the "spine" surgery he had this summer. Ed Kilgore mentioned he wouldn't have even have been playing right now and just started skating again.

I never even knew this. Did I just miss this due to the lockout talk this summer? Anyone else know about this? That seems like a pretty serious surgery.

Wow, this is unexpected- I don't recall hearing anything about this, either. Sounds like it was a major procedure, too.

I remember him mentioning on Twitter a month or two ago that he was off to therapy, but I thought nothing of it. Last week he tweeted that he was still working himself back to full strength and again I thought nothing of it. I thought it was something more minor or lockout rust.

Its just a shame they didn't transplant some of his spine into a few of his Sabres teammates.

Which seems to make it all the more bizarre we didn't really hear about.

I think this injury dates back to the WC's and it was probably affecting his play long before that.

Buffalo Sabres forward Nathan Gerbe has withdrawn from the IIHF World Championship due to a lower back injury. Gerbe is currently receiving treatment for the injury.

I was just going to say...he's one of the few Sabres who had a spine to begin with

His point totals took a huge hit in the last 2 months of the season with just 3 in his last 14 games. He missed the 9 games in February with an UBI but I don't remember what the injury was.

Regier mentioned that Gerbe wasn't a locked out player due to his injury. It's the same as the Ryan Kesler situation.

Despite the current NHL lockout, Kesler is being paid his $5 million salary and is rehabbing with the Canucks medical staff because he was injured before the last collective bargaining agreement expired in September.
