I'm not impressed.
There are enough holes in Ray's story to drive a truck through though, so it's easy to understand the incredulity at him portraying himself as a role model.

I thought it was regrettable, I got to my destination halfway thru thankfully
That goes back to the role model thing. He isn't one.

There was a telling scene in his A Football Life when a teammate recovered a fumble and a mic'd up Ray Lewis who gets there after is saying "I got it, I got it" so his teammate lets go, Ray promptly gets up and goes ape.

Then just say it, don't back away every time you say it. Point to it as a character trait, and own it.

Excellent proof that Lewis is a fraud! And proof that you aren't a Raven's fan.

cant stand Ray Lewis. Really hope the 49ers win so we dont need to see him crying at mid field on his hands and knees praising the lord for his victory.

The issue of 'character' in elite athletes is fascinating and we have touched on it a bit in a few Jets threads.
I caught just the tail end of Ralph's Rant, but I liked what I heard. I find it hard enough to explain to the rest of the world (read:my wife) why I spend so much of my precious free time cheering on a bunch of jocks. If that bunch were led by a guy whose character was as suspect as Ray Lewis'...forget it.
Lewis is at the extreme edge of the 'does character matter in elite athletes?' debate, but there are more subtle examples all around us. The older and busier I get, the more I cherish my brief diversions into the world of sports, but the harder it gets to cheer for people whose actions I cannot countenance.

Kind of puts the whole Moneyphone "controversy" in perspective, doesn't it?

Moved the posts to the NFL talk thread, I think it's more appropriate here.

I can't stand Ray Lewis and his schtick, but I don't understand why the 2000 incident (ok, let's call it for what it probably was: his 2000 murder) is being dug up again. And honestly, Lewis does deserve some credit for turning his life around. I certainly wouldn't consider him a role model, but I can see how some people would view him as such.

No one can take away from the fact that he gives the worlds best pump up locker room speeches.

To be picky, he was never accused of murder, just being an ACCESSORY to murder. The reason many people have a problem with him is because he's made it more about how he turned himself around than being apologetic to the victims' families. Big ego.

I don't really like either Harbaugh, and I don't like the 49ers. I guess I'll be cheering for the Ravens by default, not happy about it though.

My favorite Harbaugh moment is when Jim verbally committed to taking the Michigan job then decided to coach the 49ers.

picking Ravens.

why?

tougher city and they have a non-convicted murderer on their team.
