I'm not sure if Friedman's 30 Thoughts have been posted yet...

30 Thoughts: Many GMs feel trade deadline too inflationary
By Elliotte Friedman

Posted: Monday, March 18, 2013
6. The Sharks are in a tough spot. Other GMs say Doug Wilson, who is a big-time tire-kicker, is difficult to pin down. Sometimes he wants to re-shape his group (but don't even ask about Logan Couture), other times he's more conservative. Here's why: they've missed the playoffs once in 14 seasons. That resulted in 3,000 fewer season-ticket renewals, something they have never forgotten. It can really spook a franchise.

20. Dallas Eakins on Jake Gardiner: "We've challenged him to not only be the best player on our team, but the best the player on the ice. He's accepted and embraced that challenge...When he goes back to the NHL, he must not be thinking, 'How am I going to survive these 12 minutes?' but 'I'm going to force them to play me 25 minutes.'

thanks for posting this CREW, I sometimes forget to read Elliotte, he's right up there with the best in terms of hockey media!

On Gardiner: he was the best Leafs dman last year for a large number of games, including down the stretch. Having seen him live in the AHL 3-4 times this year, he doesn't look the same. I thought Paul Ranger was the best player on the ice in each game I saw, but Gardiner shows flashes of being outstanding, but is inconsistent.

Eakins has been amazing at getting players to play their best. He's done wonders with Kadri, Kostka, Fraser, Frattin and made them effective NHL players - tough to quantify what a good development program (strong coach being a huge piece) can do for a franchise! This guy would be an awesome coach in the NHL one day, sooner than later. That's one guy I would target if I were Snow/Wang/cost conscious but still wanted to win.

I know our guys in BP are still young, but we still haven't seen the best of Nino, Nelson, Donovan or deHaan (though he's not been healthy) in delivering a consistent, 60min effort, night after night. That's what they need to prove in the AHL before htey are ready to make the Isles AND make them BETTER, rather than just "not as bad as Reasoner, Boulton, Aucoin, McDonald....etc"

Rangers and Jets getting 2 points each last night hurts.

At least the Devils and Carolina lost in regulation.

Rangers also getting Zucarello back from the KHL doesn't need to clear waivers.

Pittsburgh is setting the market pretty high, you'd have to think that someone like Visnovsky/Streit will return something favorable to the Isles.

That return is crazy, I think Finley is a better player then Murray at this point, better trade him while his value is that high!

Gms like Chia and the press have been saying for weeks that trade market prices are outrageous.

Murray is a slow, physical, bottom pairing defenseman at this point in his career. Streit or Vis could easily fetch a first and a good prospect.

'why trade them for something when you can let them leave for.. nothing!' is Snow's motto

That is a pretty stiff price for Murray.

If that is the overpayment for a 3rd pairing defenseman I would almost prefer to shop Streit, Vis, and Nabokov.

I would prefer to keep Vis though.

If I had confidence that Wang/Snow would go out and bring in solid replacements, I'd say move them, but I question if their replacements will be as good as they are, if they won't be downgrades.

I only want them moved, if Snow can't extend their deals.

Then you call up teams that have been searching for pp help, like Boston and St. Louis, see what they will offer.

Except the Isles are 2 points out of a playoff spot. We could use Visnovsky and Streit as much as anyone, and that's how Snow should/will see it. Andy Strickland says the Islanders began preliminary talks with Vis today. We'll see how that goes. And obviously we already know that Streit wants to stay.

Very legitimate concerns.

I gotta be honest and say that I'd love to keep Visnovsky. We've seen what we've seen despite a number of dubious circumstances. I'd LOVE to see what Lubomir could do on the Island over 82 games with a normal camp and without all the surrounding theatrics.

Like the Swiss players, but for me, Streit's time here should be seen as over. Especially if a guy like Murray can get you two seconds...

I'd even say this has to be the requirement. No extension by April 3rd, you're out of here.

The ONLY exception to this POV for any GM should be that the team has safely locked up a playoff position (in as much as this is possible) by the deadline and knows it can compete with the existing UFAs in the line-up.

Anything else, you have to move them.

This said, I see no reason why the Isles can't lock up one of Streit or Visnovsky, move the other at the deadline and STILL compete for a PO spot, if that's what you want to call what we're actually doing right now.

I think everyone on this board has the very same fear.

But hey, we can just get another couple of waiver wire fill ins if needed.

The Lightning have hired Jon Cooper as their new Head coach. He has done an excellent job in Norfolk (their AHL affiliate) for 2+ years.

I bring this up for two reasons, He is a nearby (to NVMC) Hofstra Graduate. AND he coached Anders Lee in Green Bay of the USHL 3 years ago and won a championship there with him.

I'd trade them regardless. The team is terrible with them anyway. Might as well get value while it's high and move forward with assets.

I want Ryane Clowe for JT's line. Ready to give up Baby (Nino) to get him.
Clowe is having a terrible season scoring, but has scored more than 19 goals 4 different times, still brings the gritz and forecheck.
Only if he would sign an extension. JT needs help and his back covered.

Canes sign Semin 5yrs at 7 million per. I was hoping we would of made an attempt during the offseason. Oh well.. Whose on the waiver wire tody folks?

For all Semin haters, he actually took a pay cut for 1 yr and kept his mouth shut and played his game in Carolina to silence the critics.

I'd have no problem with Semin.. But you know people would have a field day here with his lack of D and physical play.
