The firing was premature.

After going 11-4, the Nets went 3-10 but lost to the following teams:

Golden State
Milwaukee
@ Milwaukee
Boston
OKC
@ Chicago (by 1)
@ Miami
@ NYK
NYK (by 3)
Utah

Their next 10 games were going to be:

Charlotte
Cleveland
@ SA
@ OKC
@ Wash
Sacramento
@ Philly
PHX
IND
Toronto

They should have given him a chance at least for the next two games.

I think it was due, with that lineup they shouldn't playing like **** and it seemed like the entire team had given up on Avery Johnson.
He didn't seem a good coach to begin with, had no plan at all.

Who's next? Jerry Sloan?

Williams becoming a coach killer. Let's see with a new coach if he can turn around his poor offensive game.

I don't think Avery is that great of a coach but they should have given him some more time.

Williams got his wish and he better step up now.

I totally forgot about D.Williams/Sloan situation until I came in this thread.

Hate the Nets, so I enjoy this stretch they are having. But I've always like Avery Johnson, so I feel for the guy. Hope he can get another gig somewhere.

Great piece from Woj (another one) on AJ and Deron Williams :

Oh and ...

Ramona Shelburne ‏@ramonashelburne
Phil Jackson still happily retired. But he’d listen if Nets call. Process with Lakers “got him thinking about coaching again” source says.

Thanks God. Hopefully they will hire someone soon because the thought of PJ coaching the rest of the year isn't very reassuring. That said, Avery had to go. He has no idea how to coach this team.

Wasn't a fan of Avery, and Deron is acting like a baby. Changes need to be made, and i'm just really dissapointed with this team. I love the Nets, and it's tough to watch them play uninspired, unmotivated basketball, and no-one but Crash (who doesn't know how to give up) really playing hard.

Billy King put together a good team, and should be commended, but he basically gave Deron the power to play GM. That is really dangerous, for any player to have that power.

All this being said, I'm excited about the idea that a veteran coach could come and lead this team. Deron needs to shut his mouth and make some jumpshots.

TBH, Lopez and Humphries have been injured

JJ has been playing like utter ****

And Williams became lazy the second he inked that big fat contract

Not to defend Avery, but the FO went a bit ballistic on that one

Not shocked considering the talk over the past week, but as others have noted this goes beyond AJ. I can't imagine who they'll hire next who Williams will be happy with long term either.

Well, the rumor from a year or so back was that Jackson wanted to to go to New York after having conquered Chicago and Los Angeles.... but doubt many were thinking of the Nets as a landing spot....

A coach can only do so much. It is up to the players to execute. Johnson deserved better.

Unnecessary firing. Nets hit a skid, big deal. He was just coach of the month, anyways. Unless they hire Sloan/Jackson, there won't be a better coach than Johnson.

I disagree. He was a terrible coach. He had no game plan whatsoever, ran the entire offense through isolation plays most of the time, would go small when he should have gone big like against Boston, etc. I'm so glad he's gone.

I had all but forgotten about that until I was flipping through my channels and saw it will be on this week or so (a rerun), yikes.
