As with most such arguments, there's some true parts to it, but it's not covering the main points. The people who do "this sort of thing" tend to not be criminals in that sense, at all. They tend to be rather ordinary people, that do not go through lengths of planning to do something like it. They do something drastic within their immediate reach.

Got an email from my son's school today that said that someone had sent a letter to either the all the local schools or a police station (wasn't clear) threatening the schools of East Lothian.

I'm glad it was the last day of term. Hopefully they were stupid enough to send it from a local post box.

The availability of stolen guns in America is directly affected by the large amount of guns available to the regular population. Basically most people did a terrible job of securing their guns, which led to them being stolen and resold on the street. I remember researching this a while ago. We don't have this large supply of guns in Canada and yet we don't face any of the dangers you are suggesting.

No, I'm pretty sure the police will still have them too.

I'm actually in Ontario, but my teacher actually said he would feel safer for his children if every school had someone trained to have and use a gun in case of emergency. So essentially be able to fight back instead of trying to remove the problem

I thought it was very apparent the entire context of what I said was with regards to strictly civilians.

Guess not, so in that case you are right, and I agree.

Well, that's a huge part of the problem. People make decisions, and have politicians make decisions, to make them feel safer, rather than being safer, when those two things really don't correlate all that much. Why a teacher, of all professions, would rather "treat" the symptom than address the root, as so nicely illustrated in the last sentence, is a little odd, to me.

I hate the idea of arming the teachers.

I don't want guns anywhere within a 500 mile radius of some the kids I went to school with, several of whom are in jail today.

I'm very concerned for the welfare of the Father of Jesse Lewis, his name is Neil Heslin & he is just a mess talking about his son & speaking of his final hours.

Questions like, "How much higher a dose of Prozac should this broad be on a day?", or "Who the hell watches Fox News?"

Those people will take any big news event and twist it so much to fit their skewed version of the world and how the government is complicit in these things and hiding the truth from us and blah blah blah. Believing anything like that makes you a chump.

I like to hear both sides instead of just believing what we are told is always true, and then make my own decision

I do agree though lots of times they twist Anything and everything

Not saying I believe in it, but believing in everything the media feeds you doesn't exactly make you enlightened either.

What if a teacher goes crazy? Very bad idea indeed

Leave the politics out of this thread, please and thanks.

If you want to discuss all things political, there's already a thread over in the appropriate board.

In a pretty fantastic and touching gesture, the Xavier men's basketball team paid tribute to Sandy Hook Elementary on Saturday afternoon. Just a little over a week after the incredibly tragic shooting at the Connecticut elementary school-- which took the lives of 26 people, including 20 children -- the Xavier hoops team replaced its own school name with "Sandy Hook" on the front of its jerseys for a Saturday matchup against Wofford.

Xavier head coach Chris Mack also tweeted that the game uniforms would be up for action on the team's website. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

Why is it always 26? 28 people died that die including the shooter. Take him out, you've still got 27.

Exactly. She's always forgotten. Just because she wasn't at the school doesn't mean she's any less of a victim.

Why couldn't they give teachers tasers instead? Just as effective in these situations, but not deadly. Same with people concerned about their own safety.
