@OP - you mean best unit, right?

Morenz - Lemieux - Richard

MacInnis - Gretzky

Sawchuk

This is not necessarily a list of all of the most talented players but I think this could be a "best unit".

I will make a team A and team B list.

I have decided to sometimes switch a player's position to better fit the line.

Team A

Jari Kurri LW, Wayne Gretzky C, Gordie Howe RW

Paul Coffey D, Niklas Lidstrom D

Goalie Patrick Roy

Team B

Bobby Hull LW, Mario Lemieux C, Jaromir Jagr RW

Bobby Orr D, Ray Bourque D

Goalie Dominik Hasek

BTW, between these two teams, who do you think would win in a 7 game series?

Team B, but not because of Jagr.

Kurri (out of position no less) and Coffey are the weakest links.

... Jagr and Lemieux had chemistry almost as good as Kurri and Gretzky.

The difference being is that Lemieux and Jagr were both dominant on their own while Gretzky most likely carried Kurri offensively.

So basically Jags, your post was a way to tell everyone that Jagr was better than Kurri.

I don't need to say that. Jagr was/ is better than Kurri.

The best line of hockey history before the O6 and modern era is one of these:

Frank Nighbor - Howie Morenz - Bill Cook

vs.

Joe Malone - Frank McGee - Hooley Smith

Ok, units of players who played their primes largely without another high caliber skater:

This excludes many of the best, including Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, Esposito, G.Howe, Jagr, Lindsay, both Hulls, most Montreal greats (including Roy), Lidstrom, and many others.

1st Team
LW: Ovechkin
C: Yzerman
RW: Bathgate
D: Bourque
D: M.Howe
G: Hasek

2nd Team
LW: Kovalchuk
C: Dionne
RW: Bure
D: S.Stevens
D: L.Murphy
G: Vanbiesbrouck

I disagree somewhat. Lemieux and Jagr had good chemistry, but I think they were more valuable playing on separate lines. Both were very versatile, as they could assume roles as either an elite sniper or elite playmaker, but they also both liked to have the puck on their sticks. They had great success in the regular season together, but mixed success in playoffs together. They dominated the first two rounds, in part together, in '96, but Francis' injury left them what they felt was no choice and they decided to put them together in the ECF. So not only were they missing Francis, but they reduced their threat to one line (and made Florida's work easier in a sense), then entirely changed goalies after one bad game by Wregget. They produced in the first round in '97, but were beaten by the superior Flyers. They again made it to the ECF in '01, but Jagr's shoulder injury from the offseason recurred and he was missing games in the second round. They might have been better off without him, similar to after game 1 in '06, in both cases he was a one-armed hockey player. I don't think I'm alone in believing Lemieux & Jagr would capture the magic one more time together, but it wasn't to be. I think they over-achieved in '91 & '92, and under-achieved in '93, and to some degree in '96 (although still quite a run, esp. dominating the Rangers). They over-achieved in '01, defeating the division-winning Caps and Hasek's Sabres before falling to the much superior Devils.

I think Gretzky & Kurri were more complementary, as Gretzky could be more the playmaker and Kurri more the sniper (who also covered defensively... sort of like Francis & Jagr).

End of thread indeed. Roy, Plante or Sawchuk are just as seriveable in net but those forwards and defenseman, well, let's just say the other team never touches the puck
