Nationals have "heavy interest" in Vazquez, if they sign him that means Detwiler would be the odd man out and they need a left handed reliever so he could be moved to the pen but I think that he should be starting I just think he has good upside and putting him in the pen would be a mistake.
Jeff Karstens back to Pittsburgh for one season at $2.5 million. The extremely questionable decision to non-tender him seems to have saved the Pirates $1.3 million in the end (expected to make $3.8 via arbitration).
Having a swing-man who can eat innings out of the bullpen and start 15-20 times a year is a nice thing to have.
Plus we get to look at his beautiful mug for another year, and that'll make for some frothy loins on the North Shore.
“The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile, but that it is indifferent. If we can come to terms with this indifference and accept the challenges of life within the boundaries of death, our existence as a species can have genuine meaning and fulfillment. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.” - Stanley Kubrick
Huge contract, but the Nats desperately need a shut down guy at the end of games. Their patchwork group of closers worked decently in the regular season, but in the playoffs it ended their year. Soriano really makes them Championship contenders, imo.
Soriano, Storen, Clippard, Burnett. Should be 1 of the best pens in baseball.
Burnett was a free agent and signed with the Angels.
Regardless, that's a damn fine bullpen. Probably top 5 in the league.
Makes me laugh/cry that a ****ing closer will make more each of the next two than the highest point of Andrew McCutchen's new contract, but billionaires not giving a **** about market value isn't exactly uncommon in this sport anymore.
