Goalie with two gloves instead of a stick

Hey guys,

I'm curious what do you think if a goalie uses two gloves instead of a stick and a glove?

How would that affect the hockey game? Increased or decreased GA/save percentage?

Skaters give their stick to goalies for a reason. The goalies would be half as effective.

Goalies typically use their sticks when the puck is loose in the crease. This is to protect themselves and the puck from getting hit by other sticks/skates. Also goalies use their stick to cover the 5 hole when they are standing and cover the space above the pads when they are moving laterally.

Goalies are trained to control rebounds with their blocker side, which can be just as effective as icing the puck with the glove. There's really no marked improvement with glove side/blocker side.

And obviously, puck-moving goalies (Broduer, Smith, Price) would lose a lot of effectiveness since they can no longer move the puck out of their zone.

the butterfly position would have to be modified...a big part of that position is using your stick to cover the five-hole.

How then would you distribute the puck to your team? You'd need a defenseman to always be near the goal to throw it down to them which would slow your game right down.

Also, I think it would be quite disorientating for a goalie. I've never played and it doesn't... feel right to me.

If goalies are taught to use there stick to cover there five hole why are there so many goals scored 5-hole? As an Oiler fan I have seen many many goals scored on either Khabby or Dubnyk where its a clean shot that goes through there legs... And I'm not talking about goalies being beat 5-hole when they are moving from left to right, because that's different.

Don't think 2 catchers would work. Dan Blackburn used 2 Blockers though.

Yeah. Not to mention the ball they play with is basically the size of a walnut.

My buddy used to be a hockey goalie, but plays rink bandy now. He said it was really difficult at the beginning.

There'd be a lot more goals scored 5 hole without a stick

I predict leading save percentage to land around .875 if all goalies used two gloves.

Sticks are very important. Might as well lower the net by half, cause players would never shoot high again when they can be more effective shooting low.

For some reason the idea of a goalie with 2 sticks made me think of this. Would make a sick mask for a Devil's goalie

Because the way the stick is positioned doesn't necessarily protect the 5-hole in its entirety. Depending on the angle you're facing, trying to keep the stick too close to the center will reduce the amount of ground you're covering in your blocker/shoulder side. If you have your stick a bit wider then your blocker side is safer but you're most likely leaving the five-hole unprotected. The same issue arises if the stick is physically too near the five-hole itself (in a too behind-too afar scale).

Of course there's a talent issue as well. When the play is progressing and the puck is moving, goalies are focused on keeping track of the puck instead of checking whether if their stick is actually aligning with the five-hole. So there's a lot of goals that are scored simply because the stick wasn't quite where it was supposed to be.

How about a goalie with 2 heads?

Or one arm?

How about 2 pucks in play at all times?

Terrible idea. The blocker does a fine job of covering the area of the net that this second glove would be responsible for. But no stick completely removes any option of having the goalie play the puck, and any way of pokechecking or blocking a cross-crease pass. Or any hope of protecting the five-hole.

Plus you'd have nothing to smash over the crossbar when you get really pissed off.
