The U.S., on the other hand, has nothing to lose. Canada (dream team), Russia (home ice) and Finland (best team?) are gathering all the headlines - other than Seth Jones' comment. The Americans are a good, solid team that is flying under the radar and they like it just fine, thanks!

As the usual defender of all things Canadian hockey, it pains me to say that I feel the pool will end...

1) US
2) Russia
3) Canada
4) Germany
5) Slovakia
I think you are very wrong, but it's okay to disagree.

USA has arguably the toughest schedule of any team in this side of the pool. Canada might have it tough going Slovakia, day off, and then USA and Russia back to back, but USA plays 2 back to back games and 4 games in 5 days. That's very tiring. If USA doesn't win this side of the pool, I really don't like their chances to get through a third back to back scenario in the QF/SF. Russia set this schedule as the home nation.

Even if they do win the pool, as I predict, I don't like their chances. In my mind's eye...

Canada finishes third in the pool, crosses over and beats Sweden in the QF, then play the Americans in the semi's. I am predicting a Canada-Finland final.

Anyway, I am sure the American posters don't want us dominating their thread - even tho it happens all the time. Sorry guys!

Just looked at the schedule for the US and it is pretty insane. Come on Russia I thought the Cold War was over!

IF we can grab 2nd in the pool I like our chances. Then we get probably the Czechs before facing either Finland or Sweden.

So wait, is there going to be a late edition that wasn't in camp? If so, who's the defenseman that wasn't there?

I think Czechs have a better team than Swedes this year. Injuries are killing Sweden.

The Swedes are missing some good players but the Czechs are still pretty shallow outside of their top 5-6 players and especially on the blueline.

There would be nothing shocking about that. If team USA figures out some of their chemistry up front or it really was the big guns knocking off rust and some of the jet lag from traveling over and time changes it is a pretty good squad. I don't think they are favorites but they can beat anybody. This is the fastest team they have brought since the Gold Medal squad in 2010. There are not big weaknesses anywhere, they don't have maybe the ceiling of some of the other squads, but I don't think anybody should be surprised if they win any game or the tournament.

I do think Russia is the favorite and not Canada though.

The Czechs made the choice not to bring their best squad especially defensively. As someone who watches a lot of Frk too, I wonder how in the world he is going to stay out of the box, he takes more dumb stick infractions than any of the Canadian and American players that have been parading to the box. That is in NA where they let them slide a lot more often.

I think it's pretty open. Every team has some significant issues and some of the middle class teams are stronger than usual.

Sweden is hurt by injuries to key players like Klefbom and Brodin, along with Zibanejad not being released.

Finland has one of their strongest teams ever.

The Czechs have a very good team for them.

Russia has a weak blueline if you ask me frankly. They have a team commitment to defense which they will need.

The US and Canada both have chemistry issues.

I think it's very wide open. I struggle to pick a favorite this year as I think there are five genuine contenders in a three game knockout round.

Given the talent this country use to produce (as little as 10 years ago) this is a very sad comment, indeed. How the mighty have fallen.

Well smaller countries inherently are going to struggle to win these youth tournaments, but yes the Czechs had a serious dry spell for awhile. The US can always expect to put out a decent entry simply because of how many players we have.

By the way guys, USA-Canada from Saskatoon is on the NHL network right now. We are down 1-0, I hope we can comeback.

That's fair.

I read what you wrote I thought of how, as little as 15 years ago, (both on a professional and junior level) the Czech could make the claim of being the best hockey country in the world. Now, would they even be in the top 5 on either front? I am thinking, no. Not even close.

Like Russia they probably needed a lot of time to revamp their hockey system after the collapse of communism. Hockey is a sport that requires a lot of investment in infrastructure and support.

They are out of their minds if they don't take Grzelcyk.

Wonder when we'll find out the Gryz/Sieloff cut. Riding out until the last minute I see.

It should be interesting to find out who made it, I would take Grzelcyk over Sieloff, Grzelcyk is the type of player who's needed on the international ice surface.

It's coming from someone who has had a lot of time to watch him play at BU during the lockout. He's a more well rounded player than he gets credit for, and his game is better suited for the larger ice than Sieloff's.
