Closest NHL Season

Not sure how to word it, but I hope someone will understand me!

Can anyone recall there being a close season? In respect of the top team, for example, having 100pts, and the team dead last having 90pts?

Just wondering if there has always been such a blowout between top and bottom...

Not quite that extreme but the East Division in 69-70 comes close. Top 5 team points range from 99 to 92. Alas the 6th place Leafs had only 71.

Ahh that's interesting to see...

Obviously I'm not expecting something quite as drastic as what I put haha, but it'd be nice to see what there is...

One could see with the extra point a huge number of teams in a 30 team league being pretty close but with 30 teams one is always at the risk of 1 or 2 really lousy teams as bottom feeders as well.

It would be interesting to see a breakdown of the "most competitive bye era (games played and # of teams)

Yeah that's true...

But when compares to other leagues, and no risk of demotion... You could think there is a chance of a close-ish season...

The new teams in the 1967-68 West Division finished like this ...

GP W L T PTS
Philadelphia Flyers 74 31 32 11 73
Los Angeles Kings 74 31 33 10 72
St. Louis Blues 74 27 31 16 70
Minnesota North Stars 74 27 32 15 69
Pittsburgh Penguins 74 27 34 13 67
Oakland Seals 74 15 42 17 47

All with losing records, but only Oakland was out of the playoff race.

(Sorry about the way that lines up -- I'll have to figure out how to do columns here.)
