After looking at it and discussing it internally for last 24 hrs, NHL has decided not to suspend Ray Emery. Simply put ... (con't)
Quote:
... current rulebook as it stands doesn't back any suspension for this. Obviously league doesn't like what it saw last night but ...
Quote:
... there's just nothing in rulebook for supplemental discipline for that fight
This league is a joke. Let's call up Janssen and force Giroux to fight with him.

And nothing in the rulebook my ass:

Quote:
27.6 Leaving Goal Crease – A minor penalty shall be imposed on a goalkeeper who leaves the immediate vicinity of his crease during an altercation. In addition, he shall be subject to a fine of two hundred dollars ($200) and this incident shall be reported to the Commissioner for such further disciplinary action as may be required.

Agree that was a flat out assault from a known thug.NHL We want to limit unnecessary fighting. WHAT ESPN said it was a black eye on Hockey to see something like that. NVM lets call it legal and look like total fools.

Blaming the ref for Emery's actions is completely misdirected.
He's more concerned for something that almost certainly wouldn't happen, something that four refs wouldn't be able to stop anyway if it did (the 20-on-20 brawl) than actually protecting a player? Why would the ref even be worried about a 20-on-20 brawl, you really think 30 players are going to take ten-game suspensions?

The WORST that would happen is a 6-on-6, and two players were already being escorted to the box, another two were brawling right in front of the ref.

Schneider and Daneyko both have also said the ref should have done more as well

Add the fact that this ref has already had other issues breaking up and determining fights/incidents before

hey when you see one guy wailing on an unwilling combatant, the best thing to do is make sure a 20 vs 20 brawl doesn’t erupt

Funny when we lose the fast 150 on MSG leads off with the Devils. We win it is last. Can we please get away from this POS MSG station.

Kerry Fraser also agrees the ref was in the wrong:

http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/kerry_fraser/?id=435837

Quote:
At no time when a player was taking a severe beating would I stand on the sidelines and allow it to happen without intervening, nor would I waive players away from coming to the aid of their teammate that was placed in a position of peril. I would assess the appropriate penalties that resulted from a third-man-in.
A lot of other interesting stuff in there too.

Some good stuff, but;

Quote:
With all that was going on at the time the Referee appeared to be unaware of Emery's charge and as a result of this lack of awareness was slow to place himself in a good frontal position to intercept Emery.
Uh, where do you think he came from? rappelled down from the rafters? He kind of was on the other end of the ice....if there was no awareness that Emery came charging in, well that's scary
