This league is a joke. Let's call up Janssen and force Giroux to fight with him.
Agree that was a flat out assault from a known thug.NHL We want to limit unnecessary fighting. WHAT ESPN said it was a black eye on Hockey to see something like that. NVM lets call it legal and look like total fools.
So it's his job to jeopardize his safety for the safety of someone else? Not buying that. And again, he is more focused on preventing a 20 vs 20 brawl as well. If he had a second referee's assistance, it would have been broken up. If he restrains Emery, what's stopping Holtby from getting up and clocking him? That's how crap escalates.
Blaming the ref for Emery's actions is completely misdirected.
He's more concerned for something that almost certainly wouldn't happen, something that four refs wouldn't be able to stop anyway if it did (the 20-on-20 brawl) than actually protecting a player? Why would the ref even be worried about a 20-on-20 brawl, you really think 30 players are going to take ten-game suspensions?
The WORST that would happen is a 6-on-6, and two players were already being escorted to the box, another two were brawling right in front of the ref.
At no time when a player was taking a severe beating would I stand on the sidelines and allow it to happen without intervening, nor would I waive players away from coming to the aid of their teammate that was placed in a position of peril. I would assess the appropriate penalties that resulted from a third-man-in.
With all that was going on at the time the Referee appeared to be unaware of Emery's charge and as a result of this lack of awareness was slow to place himself in a good frontal position to intercept Emery.
Uh, where do you think he came from? rappelled down from the rafters? He kind of was on the other end of the ice....if there was no awareness that Emery came charging in, well that's scary
