Valuing players without a CBA in place

Just wondering what's everyone's opinion on valuing players when we don't even know what the new CBA will have in store for players in terms of contract length and if there will be a cap and/if for how much.

So what is the 'value' in valuing players, to you, under a defunct collective bargaining agreement?

This is an issue i often bring in different thread. Its just mostly impossible to value player adequately right now.

I think many fans doesn't realize or are unaware of the impact of a CBA on player value.

There's absolutely no point at all in this.

There may be a point in valuing player to player but absolutely no way in terms of prospects or picks to players....etc. etc.

2 ways you can handle this.

1) pretend the last CBA is in place. and this way you can continue talking fantasy trades with other hockey lovers.

2) When making a trade, try and think of it from both sides, would you do it if you were a fan of the other team? Which should be done anyways.

All we can do for now is apply the standards of the last CBA. We know things will change, but we have no idea what those changes will be. As we've seen one potential apocalyptic outcome is that all player contracts will be voided and all players will become free agents, so the future is really wide open... with so many variables, it's not like we can treat player values with conditions on all the possibile outcomes. So assuming the last known set of rules is about all we can reasonably do.
