Honestly, how bad could he be? The end of the last game looked like our defense was purposely setting up Portland forwards to try to score on Talbot. He's small, but might be worth a try at the AHL level.

Might as well, we need all we can get at this point.
Hopefully this team can turn it around.

Only guy id retain from this year's D: McIlrath. And Klassen as a 7th or 8th.

Pyett has somehow managed to get his +/- up to a +8--comparatively speaking you have Gilroy who some here would slot into the Rangers own d at -16 and Vernace at -6. Pyett also leads the d-men in scoring with 18 points in 36 games. He's not very big but all in all statistically anyway he seems to be doing okay.

Why as a 7/8? He is done a competent job in the role he has. He plays good defense, takes the body, intimidates without taking unnecessary penalties. He doesn't have the skating ability for the NHL (paging Dr. Barbara Underhill, Barbara Underhill), but it's certainly good enough for the AHL. He's also been one of the most improved players in the system over the last year and a half. He really couldn't handle pro hockey at any level three years ago. Then two years ago he established himself as a solid ECHLer, last year he proved that he could play at the AHL level in a low-end capacity, and I think this year he's showing that he can be a regular AHLer.

Everyone, including myself, gave up on him as a career ECHLer, but I think he's really showing some bite. If he can improve his skating - a big if - he'll get a chance to play in the NHL. That said, the improved has to be pretty significant, with both speed and even more so balance.

I know everyone looks bad when the team isn't doing well, but what's the specific problem with Klassen at the AHL level?

I haven't been able to watch more than a couple Whale games this year but I've also noticed that Pyett's numbers look encouraging. Can anyone comment on his defensive play? Osminator, why is he not worth keeping around?

Pyett was benched a few weeks ago for poor effort. He has done better since. Needs to be less lazy.

I canceled my Game Center Live subscription, got a refund, and ordered HockeyStreams. I figured if I could get NHL, AHL and CHL games all in one package, why not?

Watched the Whale game on my tablet laying in bed the other night.

How is HockeyStreams? The last time I tried it any time a NYR game would be on the HD feed would be so laggy that it was simply unusable. Has it improved at all since then?

Noob with an early goal from Collins and Vernace. He read the play really well, charged up the ice, caught the puck on the red line and went on a semi-breakaway, scoring on a nice shot. He should really get a chance to play in the NHL.

Timmmay with a beautiful goal, going around a defenseman and scoring on Talbot. He was the last cut yesterday. Pretty terrible that he couldn't make Columbus.

Not loving The Undertaker's game tonight. Already a couple of turnovers, and was caught up the ice when we gave up the goal. Looks a little lost and confused out there.

But nice pair of saves by Talbot from up close just now.

Gave up another goal, this one on a 2-on-1. McIlrath was the only guy back, he slid back to block the shot as he should've done, but they scored anyway. He's -2 now.

Other than News goal, nightmare of a period. Who are Miller and McIlrath and Thomas supposed to learn from? Pyett? Kolarik (brutal tonight)?

First impression of Mash: runs around too much, tries to do more than his skills allow him, which led to several turnovers. I'm not seeing how he is or will be superior to Noob. Maybe he'll settle down and get better.

It's either $80 or $90, I don't remember. And no blackouts.

To the earlier question about lag--I've watched one AHL game and parts of three KHL games. Haven't had any lag. The Rangers game tomorrow is in HD, I'll report back on the quality.

Yeah, I think you got it right with your last sentence there - I would judge him on "running around too much" in his first game (much less his first period) with a new team.

I find it pretty funny that the Whale ice their toughest lineup of the season by far against a team with no real toughness.

What a terrible job by Vernace, and to a lesser degree by Miller. Vernace was just standing in front of the net watching. McIlrath doesn't look comfortable out there either. Klassen is the only defenseman looking good.

Honestly, how bad are the guys in the ECHL if they got beat out for a job by Vernace and Collins. Holy crap!

You know, if there's one guy who can benefit from Barb Underhill, it's McIlrath. He has balance issues that are easy to fix, but he clearly hasn't worked on it yet.

Major, major save by Talbot on Jam. That was felony larceny right there!
