Neither team looks good. Factor in the Swedes getting taken to a shootout by the Swiss and all of a sudden my faith in Canada is rising.

The puck was off his stick and in the net before the goalie even reacted. You can see he's a big step ahead when he is making plays like that.

People forget that the Nuge didn't even make team Canada in his draft year. Producing in the WJC shouldn't really affect a guys draft status a whole lot. I mean, it can be a coming out party for lesser names but not really a deciding factor between going 1 and 2.

Slovakia looks like the real deal this year. They haven't won a game, but they have taken it to both Russia and Canada.

They should be proud at this point.

he is trying to do it all himself instead of just being a sniper. The pressure of wearing the C perhaps.

Yeah, i think so. The pressure seems to be getting to him and i'm not just talking about this tournament, he has looked similarly ineffective in the previous 2 tournaments as well. Canada-Russia challenge and Subway Series. Hopefully, he calms down a bit and just starts playing his game because he has too much talent to be this lackluster.

I would say the Russian team is playing poorly more than Yakupov has been bad, they've been pretty disconnected as a team on the offense this game focusing mostly on solo rushes and low percentage shots. Even the 2nd goal there was an improbable solo rush that I thought the American's played rather poorly rather than being a strong play.

That being said, it's a defensive battle, not a skill showcase.

Ferraro is starting to blame Yakupov for his teammates giving the puck away when they try to pass it to him.

Yak is like Ovechkin. Great player, good teammate, being captain reduces his effectiveness.

Zharkov looks good. No results yet. If he can improve his foot speed and add some weight to his frame as to improve his strength even more then he could be a player for us for sure.

I think a lot of the Yak hate is coming from the announcers. They seem to jump on him anytime he makes a mistake. But in all honesty he hasnt been that bad in this tourney so far. Its very obvious that nothing is clicking on his line. His talent is undeniable and USA is really zeroed in on him off the rushes more than anyone else and that is very obvious. His linemates need to use that to thwir advantage and they aren't at all. Taking forever to make plays.

Yeah, the commentators are certainly diligent in their criticism of Yakupov tonight.
Unfortunately he's deserved most of the criticism.
He is looking very selfish out there ... precisely the opposite of the sort of player who should be wearing the C.

Fun fact: when I moved to Atlanta, I lived in the same neighborhood as Ferraro.

also Khokhlachev doesn't fit him as a linemate at all methinks. this team is really really thin at center.

This is what I meant in my post above. Those passes had no effort involved. Make a smart play and Yak has a break there easily.
