I've never seen him play but based on his stats/team success/draft position I was wondering how Pouliot can possibly be described as a "train wreck" so often?
It all depends on who you ask.
I see some people say "I don't watch him often, but when I do he's a train wreck"
Others will say he's a dynamic offensive defenseman who is good in the defensive zone.
I'm a Penguins fan who has never seen Pouliot play a hockey game, I would like to think he's dynamic, and I've called him that based off of others' comments, I just don't have my own opinion of him.
Only prospect I've watched out of the 4 is Maatta, watched him in the Memorial Cup, watched a London game this year on NHL Network, he's pretty solid, never seen Trouba or Koekkoek, I see people compare Trouba to Scott Stevens, I've heard Pouliot be compared to Kris Letang and Del Zotto, I've heard Maatta be compared to Ryan Suter and I've heard Slater Koekkoek be compared to Paul Martin.
I dont think so, he an average prospect and should have never gone top 10. I dont usually make claims like that but it was foulish to pick him over the guys who were left.

While he was the 10th overall selection, he was the 8th dman picked. Now, the Lightning have said that their philosophy is to pick the best available player over organizational needs, and until we see how Koekkoek pans out it's debatable if #10 was too high, but didn't think it's unreasonable to say it was ok for him to be the 8th defenseman picked in the draft. Usually that's not from the top 10, but this was a crazy draft where 8 dmen were.

Maatta is very underated. He seems to have a great hockey sense, very poised defensively, seems to have very good read on the play and has shown a very good flair for offense. He reminds me a lot about Matthias Ohlund.
Every time a D-man can hit people talk about Stevens or pronger... but I don't see the same offensive potential in the NHL for Trouba... I could see Brad Stuart very Easily, wich should provide for a very nice career nevertheless. As for Koekkoek he is a close to a sure thing as you can have. Very abrasive Dman, with his style he could turn out anywhere between Scott Hannan to Adam Foote. Pouliot is the riskiest of these picks. He is your typical High risk high reward. He could turn out to be a PP specialist a la Andy Delmore or if he develops well be the best fit for a very offensive team.
