From an entertainment standpoint, that brawl was awesome. It showed the players having passion about this. I can completely understand the Mexicans being pissed off at Robinson (who had a pretty dirty game, he did this one slide very late into 2nd base where he was pretty much in a ball trying to take out the Mexican shortstop) and then he bunts. That said, if you're the Canadians and you get nailed in the back, I'd stand up for my guy too.

Also, people are going to be talking about it, which will increase the number of people watching tomorrow's game, and the U.S. after they beat Italy tonight (they should, Italy's starter was in the Italian Baseball League last year) will get to play Canada who were in the brawl in a winner advances, loser leaves town game.

If I'm Torre, I'd used that as a speaking point to the team to show them the level of attitude they need to have to win.

would the MLB suspend for this tournament? it's a self-contained event and I think when they're trying to get teams to be more open to participation in this tournament, suspending him from playing for the Dodgers would be against that goal

who's the Canadian player getting decked here?

As good as the brawl was for the WBC, it was bad for Olympic baseball. Source says IOC officials were here, and brawl did not reflect well.

**** unwritten rules. Always hated them. It's even more laughable that the unwritten rules are in effect considering that run differential is a huge part in this tournament. Canada wasn't only playing in this game. They were also playing for the standings, so the score is a huge part of their life in this tournament.

Really unfortunate what happened. Mexico just came across really ******** there, but I saw Canada swinging first if I recall correctly. Either way USA has to fregging win tonight and Cuba\Japan are in the process of being eliminated by what seems like the new powerhouse, the Netherlands!!

USA, Dominican etc. would have all done the same thing. No point in saying Canada had no reason to charge the mound. The bunt was for a legit reason they just got mercy the game before, they need the runs otherwise they might as well not have even entered. Good for Canada to stick up for themselves.

This is an embarrassment for USA.

It's for the best if they crash and burn just because it's the only hope for this tournament ever turning into something meaningful.

joe sheehan said it on twitter. the best thing for this tournament is the us not winning. it's about spreading the game around the world, not the us swinging our dicks all over the tournament like it's 1985.

No but they would have to beat Canada by five (earned) runs or six runs no matter what.

What? USA has to make it far for this tournament to become something meaningful, IMO. Imagine if Canada was a laughing stock in Olympic Hockey.

I believe so. If they beat Italy, I believe it's a win or go home vs Canada tomorrow. They would have to crush Canada tomorrow if they lose tonight.

But we never won. Maybe if we did win some people would give a **** here. Probably not though.

Pretty embarrassing if they can't beat Italy, even with missing a lot of our best players, they are still playing against a bunch of Americans that would have no shot at making the US team...other than maybe Rizzo.

no, people here don't care unless the games actually mean something to what they grew up watching.

february and march baseball is never going to matter to people. it's preseason stuff. this tournament isn't an advertisement for the us being the best baseball country in the world. i don't think they have been in a while. i think in a real, straight up world series, the dominican republic would hand the us their ***** in a seven game series.

It's the opposite. The US winning this tournament when they don't take it seriously and are without the majority of its desired players would do nothing but "validate" this exhibition format for the execs out just for money. Them continually embarrassing themselves here may eventually force the changes that could lead to a meaningful tournament instead of a glorified exhibition tournament.

Young baseball fans definitely care about this tournament. Older fans don't care because they aren't really used to international baseball. But younger fans like things like this.

there won't be a meaningful tournament to american players.

unless the wbc starts paying them multiple millions of dollars, they will continue to half ass it or ignore it.

some players are proud of their country and want to play a series of exhibition games to prove it. others would rather fulfill their contract to their employers and seek to improve themselves at the job that actually pays them. there's no wrong answer here.

i don't think there's really an older/younger divide.

some younger fans don't care about baseball aside from their home team. others, like me when i was a kid, will pore over stats in the newspaper or internet, and watch every game possible. same with the older generation. there are some writers who i don't think watch games, they just look at box scores, and there are others who are live-tweeting wbc games at 5 in the morning.

Really? A real US team could look something like

C- Posey
1B - Fielder
2B - Pedroia
3B - Wright
SS - Tulowitzki
LF - Braun
CF - Trout
RF - Kemp
DH - Hamilton or McCutchen, either may play LF instead of Braun and hive him DH possibly

SP - Verlander
SP - Kershaw
SP - Strasburg
SP - Price
SP - Cain/Lee/Dickey/Halladay etc pick your poison

The pitching that the US could have is absurd.
