Is being able to get your email, every second of every day that important to you?

Because for me it's not. If people need to get a hold of me right away they know to call or text.

Think I have 3gb or 5gb a month, work pays the phone so I don't have a clue.

Meh the only time I really use my data is when I'm on the train.

Tangent: if someone is sending an e-mail, it shouldn't require an immediate response.

Who gets this perturbed by other people's phone plans? I'm sure $250 a year is more valuable to some people than constantly being connected to your email. Hell, I'm sure there are people out there who would rather pay $250 a year to NOT be constantly connected to their email.

Even without the data smartphones still carry value in their versatility. That's a phone, camera and MP3 player in one device. Not sure why it would bother someone that people choose to leave it at that instead of paying more to satisfy a non-existent addiction to internet.

Only time I use 4g is if I'm in a car or our cottage in the woods. House, work, friends, school is all wifi. I'd consider ditching my data plan if it was possible, but Verizon makes you get a data plan if you buy a smartphone..they probably realize that wifi is everywhere now so a lot would opt not to buy the data plan.

Well OP started the thread doing the same thing but in the exact opposite direction. I generally wouldn't care but you would have to think that if so many people didn't just eat this stuff up at the current prices we may actually get reasonable rates.

And saying "then why bother getting a smartphone" is kind of pointless these days. 'Smartphone' is just a marketing buzzword anyways, indicating a cell phone that has enough power under the hood to pass off as a low end computer. At this point the technology has progressed enough that you can get the lower end smartphones for free on a 2 year-no data contract.

Or you could just have an account since forever ago and be grandfathered into an unlimited data plan like me.

But those saying that a data plan isn't needed... really? I mean, I understand getting the cheap one if you don't use data that much. But there are times you will find yourself in a place without wifi and need to (or at least want to) use data services. There's no way to avoid it.

I have a data plan with a 500mb limit, and my phone rarely has 4G service in Ottawa. I'm pretty much entirely reliant on wifi because the infrastructure sucks. I absolutely disagree with the OP - people without data plans are saving a ton of money.

For reference, my month starts on the 28th. Since Nov.28th:
Data: 742.1 KB
Wifi: 3715.73 MB

I've got a 6GB super plan with full texting and 500 minutes for $75 a month. Samsung Galaxy S3.

I never use absolutely all of it but it's nice to have all that space.

Had a blackberry with koodo for a year paying 30 bucks a month for no data (I had a social plan tho so fb+twitter) and just used wifi for everything else when possible. They had a sale on last month for 30 bucks a month for what I had +200mb data so I have that now. But I went a year without data and survived...

Got a Samsung Galaxy S3 and a 7GB of data usage, along with unlimited texting.

God send for someone that frequents the internet while on the road. While at home, I have my mobile set up to use the WIFI from my computer.

$30 for unlimited isn't too terrible. It's not available anymore, but it's what I pay since I've been with AT&T forever.

Some people just want to browse their phone on occassion (places with wifi connection, while in the bed, etc). It's certainly a lot more useful if you have 3G/4G but it isn't necessary. In my first year at Cal, I used an unlocked iPhone. There is wifi throughout the entire campus, so 3G wasn't necessary there, and when I wasn't on campus or at my apartment, I just didn't browse my phone.

That was back in the day though, data plans are pretty cheap nowadays.

You just answered your own post. It's helpful, but it certainly isn't needed. Some people don't need to check their email 24/7.
