Rnh/rhn

Why is it RNH not Ryan Hopkins Nugent, most hyphenated last names are alphabetical... what gives?

Could be the parents decided to use both last names, usually the last part is the males.

A lot of people I know with hyphenated names usually use their moms name first. Whether it be because she had him before they were married/met/whatever.

My hyphenated last name isn't in alphabetical order. Never heard of this "rule" before, personal preference in my experience.

I generally find that in hyphenated names, the original name is listed first and the new name is added on.

But realistically when you go for a name change, it could be listed any way that you choose or you could even choose a completely new name such as "Princess Consuela Banana Hammock" if that's what you like.

The "mom's name first" thing makes sense, since his mom's last name is Nugent

Right, so his Mom was Ms. Nugent, she married Mr. Hopkins and became Mrs. Nugent-Hopkins. Their children are all Nugent-Hopkins as well.

That's how I always understood hyphenated last names to work.

No, this is not correct.

In North America, when people have both their mother's and their father's last names, it is traditionally First Name Mother's Surname-Father's Surname

I think it's different in Spanish and Latin American countries - when people have both parents' last names it's First Name Father's Surname Mother's Surname

In my experience the placement of the names is whatever sounds best. Nugent-Hopkins is far smoother than Hopkins-Nugent.

If it was one or the other, it'd probably be Ryan Nugent, but at this point, that'd sound odd.

I have a hyphenated last name and it starts with my Fathers surname. It is supposed to start with the mothers but it sounds much smoother with my Father's first so they put it that way.
