Definitely not in the spirit of the CBA, but Uncle Lou knew all the tricks.
Mogilny? Yeah, that was an eye opener.

Mogilny didn't get buried in Europe, he was buried in Albany.

Sorry, but as a Devils fan, you have no room to call a punishment a joke. The Devils were built by a joke of a punishment in the 90's.

Mogilny wasn't buried in the AHL - he was buried on LTIR.

Mogilny signed his multi-year deal at 35 yo - he would have counted against the cap even if buried in Albany, Europe, or if he retired.

The Devils managed to get him on LTIR. The NHL initially rejected the findings of the Devils' team doctor and had him examined by an Independent Physician (selected by both the League & the NHLPA), who confirmed that a chronic hip problem was related to his employment as a hockey player.

I don't recall Lou burying anyone in the AHL or Europe for cap reasons.

The other big Cap "cheat" that Lou did was trading the "unofficially retired, soaking on a beach in Florida but hadn't filed retirement papers yet" Vladamir Malakhov to the Sharks - giving away a 1st rounder for the Sharks to take his dead cap space (that the Sharks weren't going to need anyway).

The league made billions under the old CBA. What we had was fine. They just needed to tweak some minor details. Instead, we have two sides who are trying to win the CBA, rather than make sound business decisions.

Yes, a joke of a punishment when just-as-bad-if-not-worse contracts were not punished.

The league punished the Devils when, during the course of "fixing" the problem, admittedly wanted to attack OTHER contracts.

Amazingly, their "solution" actually resulted in contracts that are just as bad, if not worse, than the original Kovalchuk contract.

He was buried in the minors for the second half of the 05-06 season (year 1) of his contract that opened room to allow Elias to come back halfway through that season. It was in camp the next year when they were stuck with the hit that they LTIR'd him.

The also stuck McGillis in the minors for those two years along with a few years later Matvichuck.

Lou has never held a press conferences for anybody other than for the announcing of head coaches for the same reason why he doesn't allow players to choose numbers - because of his philosophy regarding the importance of the front of your jersey and not so about the back

When it was announced by the Devils that there would be a presser for Kovy, it came as a surprise and it wasn't very hard to distinguish who was the driving force behind it
