"Average" team?

They were a pretty damn solid team.

Crosby-Malkin-Staal down the middle = Unmatched center depth

Gonchar-Letang-Orpik-Scuderi/Whitney-Gill = Great top 4

Fleury in net = Great playoff goaltender (sometimes )

Kennedy-Staal-Cooke = Great shutdown 3rd line

Kunitz, Dupuis, Hossa, Malone, Guerin, Sykora, Fedotenko are some pretty good top 6 wingers.

Seabrook > Keith.

Fleury is a terrible playoff goaltender (sub .900SV% in 4 of 6 playoff appearances, only above average in one of those appearances, when they lost in the SCF), those wingers are not good top 6 wingers, and Letang was not nearly the defensemen he is today back then. As I said earlier, Crosby and Malkin combined for 67 points out of 79 goals scored by the Penguins. They absolutely carried that team through the playoffs.

Doesn't look that great to me. Hossa only played for them for one year and everyone else was a borderline second/third-liner. That top four was pretty solid but pales in comparison to recent top fours from other Finalists (Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Vancouver, Detroit, Philly, etc.).

lol no forget the Sedins I would take just Hanhuis Elder and Schneider over Crosby and Malkin. High scoring 1 way forwards aren't whats important in Hockey.

Goaltending and Defense win Stanley Cups.
High Scoring 1 way forwards win Hart Trophies.

Not sure why Hockey fans have forgotten this?

It's one of the two. Not both. If it were both I'd definitely give Montreal's 4 best players. For just one of them no. Too many important positions, especially goaltending, will be vacant.

Crosby and Malkin have won a cup and been to another final.

Hamhuis, Schneider and Edler have won squat. And Edler played like a sieve in the 2011 finals.

Offense is important whether you chose to believe it or not- http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh...99&postcount=3

The Kings break the trend somewhat, but their offense did a complete 180 post-Carter trade.

I like the foursome of LA because of the risk involved in Crosby (with the injuries).

If the injuries are left out of the equation. I pick Crosby and Malkin over any foursome any team can comes up with.

I would probably take Jankowski alone over Crosby and Malkin.

Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Howard would have won this easily.

I'd take Bergeron, Seguin, Rask, Chara, but Chara is getting old... Still two #1 centers, one of them very young with lots of potential and the other a Selke winner, and a young #1 goalie.[/QUOTE]

Seguin is a #1 C? When did he even become a #2C?

I love Bergeron, but no way that 4some = Crosby and Malkin

Considering 3 people could get points for every 1 goal, that statistic doesn't really mean much. I don't know the numbers, so your point could still be true, but what were their combined points out of the team's total points?

Maybe I should've changed this to a trio vs Crosby/Malkin, but I figured that one would be too easy.
Disregarding age, I'd take Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronwall, and Howard easily.

Also would take Weber/Rinne. Best defender in the league plus top three goaltender. Obviously Erat and Fisher aren't the best, but that's more than enough to compensate, especially considering defenders and goalies are more valuable.

I'd take the 4 players out of Chicago and LA that have already been mentioned.

Fleury was very good that playoffs, not sure what you were watching. And yes Crosby/Malkin carried that team but all the Eastern conference teams they played were terrible defensively so dont get carried away.

I would take Kopitar, Richards, Doughty, Quick for sure over Crosby/Malkin but LA is probably the only team.

Not for me. Age is a huge consideration in this trade and the Wings are too old in that deal.

Capitals - Ovechkin Holtby Backtrom Carlson
Blackhawks - Kane Toews Keith Hossa
Ottawa - Karrlson Spezza Alfredsson Fuba
Wild - Suter Parise Koivu Backstrom
Red Wings - Datsyuk Zetterberg Filpulla Howard
some of these lists are ridiculous (Flyers, Canucks and Preds come to mind) and to be fair the OP left it open for goalies but how good is the best goalie in the league compared to the 10th?

Something we ask in Vancouver all of the time (having Lou and Schneider but only 1 guy can play net at a time) and people forget that Bernier was the goalie of the future in LA before Quick came out of literally nowhere. That isn't going to happen to Kopitar or any star center as there is position scarcity and a dropp off at Center, not so much for Goalies.

I would take Crosby and Malkin, health assumptions of course, because the next 2 players on any Pitt team are going to make up the difference in the overall quality of the next best set of 4 which would be LA or Chicago IMO. (ie. Letang and Neal for instance).

Crosby and Malkin are just clearly 2 of the top 3 centers in the NHL, probably 1a and 1b, extremely hard to top that with any group of 4 for me.
