Would you rather repeat a lottery season, or take the next step and come in 9th in the conference?

I hope you guys don't get Luongo, it reminds me of Cujo and the Eagle.

Actually, I think that most people realize that last year was an epic collapse. for about 75% of the season our young team was a playoff team. We all saw them fall off the map starting in February. We all understand that there is a reasonable expectation of missing the playoffs, but we all also understand that the Leafs have played playoff hockey for ~50 game stretches before.

Looking at last year's standings and predicting a Leafs failure doesn't make you brilliant, even if it does indeed happen.

What exactly are the ramification of this?

The upper limit on the salary cap in the first year is $60 million, but teams can spend up to $70.2 million (all pro-rated). The cap floor will be $44 million

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=412844

Whats the point of declaring an upper limit but telling teams they can overspend it? Why not just say the cap is 70.2

They were bouncing in and around 8th place which is not good at all (average since this is a 30 team league) and then they finished 5th.

So really this is nothing new.

I remember when the Leafs had hot finishes to end the seasons and everyone was pumped.

I'm sorry but your record tells you what you are.

This time 25 teams were better than us.

Two years ago (2011), only 21 teams were better than us.

So we actually have gotten worse.

Me too actually... I really dread those days of conference finals appearances and owning the Senators in the playoffs ever year.

As for next step? Considering the team was a playoff team for 75% of the season last year I would think the next step would be to make the playoffs. I would not want the team to finish 9th. If they are going to miss, I hope it's badly.

Lottery quite easily for me.

But I understand the NHL has changed the probabilities of the draft lottery.

Let go of this already. Saying a certain amount of teams are better than you because this is where you finished in the standings is not math. It's over-simplification. There are too many variables that go into an 82 game season. Can you make some conclusions about your roster, yes.

Who cares how long they floated around 5th last.

THe standings are counted until the last game of the season...and that last day meant that 25 teams were better,

Really don't understand this incorrect math...

25 teams were better than the Leafs last season. 21 the year before..and 29 the year before that.

That's all that matters.

The standings don't take into account opinion.

Of course extrapolating regular season finishes and concluding that someone is worse because of it is a fools a game.

I can't really argue you that the Leafs got better if all you're going to look at is statistics, I may only say that last year we had two top 20 point getters until one of them got injured, our number one d-man actually played like one, our team was playoff caliber (8th place isn't good, but it was good enough for the cup winner last year) for 75% of the season until the wheels fell off.

The team is young and succumbing to pressure isn't something new for a young team. I don't want to just pass it off as that as there were serious holes in our game, but if you analyze this team line by line, there is a 30 goal-scorer, or 60 point player on the first three lines.

Florida Panthers, or Anaheim Ducks. Tell them how much the previous season's standings matter.

Leafs being younger should do well...

In a shortend season many older teams will take 20 games plus to get the creaks and rust out,by which time the season will be over.It is like asking an older long distance runner to start doing the 200m run,he has no chance against youth.Too bad about the fake cap(70.2). Gillis would have been screwed. With only one buyer his value is now Franson who we replace with Ranger. Personally, I hope we stay away, but Burke may feel the pressure to make one last dumb trade.

My math wasn't incorrect haha. New Jersey played 25% of a season in 2011 just to come back in 2012 and make it to the finals. If final standings are all that count, tell it to their conference championship.

So despite being 5th last, 9th last, and 2nd last over the past three seasons...what you are saying is that the Leafs are better than teams they finished behind?

Do you know how ridiculous this sounds?

Thank god it's over. Can't wait to see the likes of Connolly and Lombardi competing hard out there representing the Blue and White.

Should be interesting to see how a condensed schedule effects players. Will older players be better off with a sprint for a few months rather than a long season with practices in between games? Will AHL players coming up have a head start on older guys who have not been playing games? Lwafs have a young team so it will be interesting to see.

I just hope the Leafs get one of MacKinnon, Jones, or Drouin.

Maybe even Pulock.

Now we can get on the business of finishing 28-30 so we can pick one of Jones, Mackinnon, or Drouin. Given this is basically the same roster we have had the past 4 years and COL and EDM have improved, I like our chances.

All of the people involved in this "negotiation" made it look like rocket science.
How greedy are all of these people anyways? They must have it SO BAD to have argued for this long.
The NHL is a huge joke. Two lockouts in 8 years is absolutely ludicrous.

........but I'll still watch NHL hockey since it is now back haha.

While I agree this line-up is horrendous enough to get a top 3 pick with the shortened season they could really screw it up with a good 10 game stretch. Plus when does the 14 non playoffs teams in the draft lottery start? That could screw things up too.
