Week of December 17th - 23rd: Sunday Papers (Cherry tweets about Kane)

Sunday, December 23rd Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets & Affiliate news:

Twitter: Don Cherry tweets about Evander Kane situation. This morning Don sent about 5 tweets saying he supports Kane and that he was simply joking around but hopes tax man wasn't watching.

Globe and Mail: Aucoin’s four-point outing guides Marlies past IceCaps. The Caps failed to win the second game of the back-to-back in Toronto last night.

Coloradoan: Colorado’s home roll continues with sweep of Bakersfield. Finding ways to win against the weaker teams is important, especially as the Eagles get ready to embark on a 6 game road trip following the Christmas holidays.

News Reporter: Rookie goalie Adam Brown finding a groove for Colorado. With all the missing players up front, Colorado is getting some much needed help in-between the pipes.

CBA news:

Edmonton Journal: Hamrlik stands by his criticism of NHLPA, still hopes for compromise solution. I really respect the fact that Hamrlik hasn’t backed away from his comments.

National Post: Don Cherry confident lockout will be over within weeks. The Coach is confident that we will see NHL hockey again this year (technically next year). What do you think?

CBC: NHL sides talk by phone, no meetings scheduled. Both waiting till the last minute to get this done. Terrific.

World Juniors:

Minneapolis Star-Tribune: Finns score four third-period goals, beat U.S. 5-1. The Jets draft pick picked up an assist on the lone U.S. goal in the loss to the Finns on Saturday.

Calgary Herald: Canada beats Sweden in junior warm-up. It wasn’t a pretty win but a nice shootout victory.

Toronto Star: Canada spot-on with Steve Spott as coach. Not the conventional way to get to Team Canada but Steve Spott has worked hard to get to his present position.

TSN: Boone Jenner isn’t sure what else he could have done. Not surprisingly the Canadian players believe the hit was fair and doesn’t merit further disciplinary action.

Monday Papers

Monday, December 17th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets & Affiliate news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets blueliner happy to be home. Enstrom's return will help flesh out the ranks of NHLers skating at the IcePlex.

Victoria Times Columnist: Lowry’s hat trick, Bow’s shutout, leads Swift Current Broncos past Kootenay Ice. The Jets prospect has now reached a new career high in goals scored.

Jets official site: Desktop wallpaper. The Jets are offering fans some new wall paper options for their computers.

IceCaps official site: Caps blank Bruins 4-0. After enduring a winless December, St. John’s has turned things around to win 2 games in a row.

CBA news:

AM Law Daily: Weil set to face off against Skadden, Proskauer in NHL Labor War. Want to know about some of the lawyers involved in the process?

TSN: The NHL’s lawsuit and what’s next. TSN’s legal expert takes a look at the various aspects of the latest move by the NHL. Goes over the basics, why the NHL sued, what the NHL is asking for and some all the other legal eagle topics you are just dying to read about.

Montreal Gazette: Bettman can’t take Canada’s game away from us. It seems a bit disingenuous to simply chalk up the latest moves because Bettman is a New York lawyer who has no love for the game. NHL hockey is a business. Plain and simple. If you want hockey in its pure form, you can go watch it at any outdoor rink in Canada.

New York Times: Voting begins to give Board authority to dissolve NHL Players Union. The vote goes until Thursday and requires a 2/3 majority to authorize the dissolving of the Union. Of course we have to hope negotiations remain ongoing throughout the week.

Hockey news:

Globe and Mail: Hockey Canada remains focused on player safety. Don Cherry has been complaining for years that the equipment that players wear is way too hard.

Illegal Curve Hockey Show replay:

Part 1: CBA Discussion. CBA Discussion: Should people with a hockey background or a business background be General Managers of NHL franchises? Canada selects their team for the World Junior Hockey Championship in Russia. Scott Hartnell vs. Roman Hamrlik.

Part 2: Interview with Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe & Mail. Injuries around the NHL. NHL News & Notes. Rapid Fire. Interview with Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada. Cheers & Jeers.

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday, December 18th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets & Affiliate news:

TSN: Hainsey anxious to get talks going again. Not a big surprise that the players are wanting to get back to the table at this point.

Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets effect. Those are some impressive, but unsurprising, numbers showing how business leaders in the province feel about the positive impact the return of the Jets and NHL hockey has had on Manitoba.

Winnipeg Free Press: Good riddance, 2012. While the lockout will certainly be a significant memory of 2012, Jets fans have to focus on the positives that were experienced during the first 4 months of the year with the return of NHL hockey to our city. What were your favourite memories? (please comment on IC and not here so it won't impact posting)

Winnipeg Free Press: Toby’s glad to be back, lockout or no. Enstrom seems happy to be back in the city although it is clear that he wants to be talking hockey and not lockout.

Globe and Mail: IceCaps injury list still long but losing streak over for Jets’ farm team. The team returned Joey Sides to the ECHL affiliate Colorado Eagles yesterday. They still need to find their scoring touch as this has eluded them all season long. Doesn’t sound like Burmistrov will be returning to the lineup anytime soon.

Northern Colorado 5: Eagles Week In Review. Taking a look back at the week that was and ahead to what the Jets ECHL franchise can expect.

CBA news:

Globe and Mail: NHL lockout doing ‘alarming’ damage to brand. Can anyone be surprised by the knowledge that the league and players have done irreparable harm to the game. Part of the problem is the indifference we are seeing on a daily basis. People have lives, jobs and can find other hobbies to spend their disposable income on. Both sides have taken the fans for granted and I will be quite curious to see how they plan on fixing this problem. Will it be ‘business as per usual’ or will both the NHL and NHLPA make tangible efforts to repair the fracture they have created?

CBC: Steve Fehr says NHLPA ‘ready to meet’ NHL. Is this an olive branch? Nope just more posturing as we get closer and closer to a drop dead date the league claims not to have.

Sportsnet: NHLPA’s strategy could backfire. The players position, which some have claimed is not posturing, is clearly just that as illustrated in this excellent article.

CBC: NHL needs to ‘make whole’ with fans. Count me as someone who has been advocating this for the entire lockout. The fans are paying for this and as I indicated above, I will be quite interested to see what is done to acknowledge the sacrifices NHL fans have made during the lockout.

World Juniors:

NHL.com: Canadian team features strong group of Quebecers. Unfortunately for Manitobans we are underrepresented (0) on this year’s team.

ESPN: Miller looks to lead Team USA. Nice to have someone with some AHL experience on the team.

CBC: Suspended Senators prospect unavailable for tournament. Team USA got some bad news yesterday when it was ruled that the 10 game suspension for Noesen he received in the OHL would be upheld by the IIHF.

NHL.com: NHL Network-US, NHL.com offers live WJC coverage. For those in the States wondering how they could watch the tournament here is the answer.

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday, December 19th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets & Affiliate news:

Winnipeg Free Press: ‘It was a joke’ says Kane. Ed spoke with Kane and got his thoughts regarding the controversial tweet.

Twitter: Kane photo causes backlash. The Jets young gun caused some twitter consternation as he tweeted a picture of himself in Vegas holding bundles of cash. Does this picture bother you? Probably not the best message to be sending during a lockout.

CBC: Ron Hainsey anxious to resume labour talks. Hainsey is right. It is difficult to make a deal if you are not meeting but at this point the league is done with public shows which accomplish little more than gets fans excited. If the sides are not ready to compromise on their positions, then it seems pointless to meet.

NHL.com: Adam Lowry scores twice as Swift Current Broncos down Saskatoon Blades. The Jets prospect is on quite the streak right now. He has 12 goals since December 5th and is on a seven game scoring streak. Last night's 2 goals put his total at 23.

The Telegram: Icecaps, Phantoms familiar foes this fall. They didn’t play once last year but tonight is already the 4th meeting between the clubs.

Reporter Herald: Colorado Eagles lose top two scorers. And just like that the top two scorers in the ECHL, not just on the team, are off to a new AHL team (Bridgeport Sound Tigers – Farm team of the New York Islanders) after signing PTO’s.

CBA news:

Globe and Mail: Lockout will force NHL to take its medicine, only question is when. The NHL is flying too close to the sun on wings of pastramii. This can only end in disaster in the markets that simply cannot afford the ill will.

Winnipeg Free Press: Dithering NHL, union need to deal. Gary sums it up best “make the deal already”.

Globe and Mail: NHL on knife-edge of relevancy. As a direct result of the lockout, both sides should spend money as they try to lure back fans. Of course we know that in Canada and the northern U.S. states this won’t be required as, I suspect, you will barely notice any impact once games resume.

ESPN: NHL, NHLPA waiting for the other to make a move. A multi billion dollar game of chicken these two are playing.

CBC: Prime Minister Harper says lockout dangerous business for NHL. The Prime Minister of Canada is a big hockey fan and recognizes what problems the NHL lockout has caused in this country.

TSN: Talks remain stalled; more games likely to be cancelled. Stay tuned for what will likely be the last round of cancelled games this week. If this goes as scripted the NHL will cancel games until the middle of January. They will buy themselves enough time to get a deal done before the New Year and have games resume middle of the month.

NHL news:

Toronto Star: Ball hockey players shocked to find Sidney Crosby playing goalie. While this is a very fun story for those involved what I found very telling was the expected backlash after the NHLPA tweeted this news. Fans are clearly not happy and these ‘feel good’ stories are just not going to accomplish much of anything.

World Juniors:

Globe and Mail: The things Eric Duhatschek learned at world junior camp (Audio). Duhatschek shares his impressions on this year’s edition of Team Canada.

TSN: TSN delivers multi-platform coverage. While you might not be getting your fill of NHL hockey this holiday season, TSN will ensure that you have many ways to access the World Junior tournament.

Thursday Papers

Thursday, December 20th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Breaking: Jets announce cancellation of all games thru January 14, 2013. Affects 5 home games (TBL, MINN, FLA, NJD, NYI). Time to find new NYE plans.

Jets & Affiliate news:

TSN: Mark Scheifele 1-on-1 (video). The Jets first pick in 2011 talks about playing with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and the chemistry they're building.

Winnipeg Free Press: Kane’s days are numbered in ‘Peg. Gary clearly spells out why he believes Kane’s time in Winnipeg is finite. Some very interesting revelations in this article.

Winnipeg Free Press: Yin and Yang of Evander Kane. Detailing his on and off ice activities. And before this becomes “is Winnipeg really that much of a fishbowl”, remember that there are numerous other players who live in this city, party and do not draw attention to themselves.

Winnipeg Sun: Winger without a clue. Paul also doesn’t hold back in what he views as a major misstep by the young Jets winger.

Winnipeg Sun: KHL was too slow for Kane. While many expected Kane to dominate in the KHL his numbers were quite disappointing, something he attributes to the difference in game play between the NHL and KHL.

Winnipeg Sun: Kane cash photo stirs emotions (video). In case you missed any of yesterday’s excitement, the Jets young gun tweeted a picture of himself in Vegas (from November) and it had an immediate impact on the world of twitter (how can you tell the NHL is locked out?). Not surprisingly locals were none too pleased when interviewed about the photo. Now they likely didn’t have the context of his comments to both the Sun and Free Press, but nevertheless, fans let their feelings be heard.

Winnipeg Jets official site: Dedication to the community (video). Mick E Moose and the Winnipeg Jets promo team give back to the local community.

TSN: Schenn scores winner as Phantoms down IceCaps. After losing 5 straight to start December the Caps had briefly turned things around with a 2 game winning streak. That came to a halt with a loss to Adirondack last night.

The Coloradoan: Ulanski powers Eagles to win over Condors. Despite only having 5 forwards and 8 defencemen, the Eagles pulled off another victory with a depleted roster.

Northern Colorado 5: Eagles add Steve Haddon. After losing the 2 top scorers in the ECHL, Colorado went back to the well to add a known quantity in Haddon.

CBA news:

Globe and Mail: Fehr responds to Daly’s comments, waiting on NHL to resume talks. Love the suggestion that they go back to the group of owners and players that were negotiating in New York but add in Bettman and Fehr.

CBC: Daly tells HNIC Radio there will be a season. Should fans take this to the bank as proof positive that the 2013 season will eventually get underway? While it is a positive sign no point in getting your hopes up too soon.

ESPN: Union wants to restart talks with NHL. Of course with the expectation that the players are going to lose out in the current negotiation, the union is doing whatever it can to save face. This means continuing to play this game of cat and mouse.

Globe and Mail: Canadian appetite for NHL likely to endure. Are we really surprised that the desire to watch live NHL hockey in this country remains strong despite the lockout? The big test for the NHL will be in the markets that were struggling before the lockout began.

World Juniors:

Montreal Gazette: Galchenyuk on a roll heading into tournament. The Montreal Canadiens prospect has been tearing up the OHL of late and will be a big addition to Team USA in this year’s tournament.

National Post: Everything you need to know about Canada’s team. A breakdown of the entire Canadian team.

TSN: Eberle tops TSNs list of Top 40 Canadian WJHC players. Whenever you find yourself ahead of the Great One on a Top list of players, you know you’ve accomplished something special.

Friday Papers

Friday, December 21st Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Note: We are at the conclusion of the first week of the Team Illegal Curve Beard growing competition as Ezra and Drew help support the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba in conjunction with the Festival du Voyageur in the 31st annual beard growing contest. Every Friday we will be giving readers an update on the beard progress and here you go:

Note II: Don’t forget to tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 from noon to 3 pm on Saturday. Guests: Bobby Holik (former New Jersey Devil, currently Holik on Hockey), Corey Pronman (ESPN).

Jets & Affiliate news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Lockout tough, but cold weather won’t chill this Scandinavian. Jokinen has been quiet on the lockout front but has diligently worked out at the IcePlex on a daily basis.

Winnipeg Free Press: A star in the making. Redmond is having a break out season in the AHL as he is making a lot of the brass take notice of his play.

Winnipeg Free Press: Prospects. A quick glance at how the Jet draft picks over the last two years are developing.

TSN: Mark Scheifele 1-on-1 (video). The Jets first pick in 2011 talks about playing with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and the chemistry they’re building.

Illegal Curve: More Jets games cancelled. In case you missed the news, the NHL cancelled games through January 14th, which will impact 5 Jets home and 2 away games. This likely brings us to the final round of game cancellations as the drop dead date is believed to be the middle of January.

Global Winnipeg: Jets merchandise a hot gift despite lockout. While you cannot expect sales to be of 2011 levels, it appears that Winnipeg’s appetite for all things Jets continues to be substantial.

CBA news:

CBC: NHL’s next cancellation will be the season. As expected the final twist in this long winding road has occurred and it is either a cruise straight ahead to a deal or right off a cliff and a cancelled season.

USA Today: Lockout has chilling effect on business. Here are the real people who are impacted as a result of this lockout. How can they be ‘made whole’?

TSN: Holidays won’t be an impediment to labour talks. Why should holidays be any different than any other day of the week when neither side is meeting?

Sportsnet: Backlash over NHL’s latest cancellation. Twitter was a flutter with the latest news of games being cancelled.

World Juniors:

National Post: Canada taking nothing for granted. A loss, even if a tune-up game, will tend to do that. If it doesn’t than your team has some significant problems.

Vancouver Sun: Country-by-country look at the 2013 world junior hockey championship. In case you’d like a quick refresher on the teams playing in the tournament.

CBC: Discipline at forefront of Canada’s pre-world junior loss. On a positive note, the Jets Mark Scheielfe scored a goal in the loss.

TSN: Seth Jones feels USA is team to beat. You like to see confidence in a young gun who is taking the leadership reins of this team.

Saturday Papers

Saturday, December 22nd Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Note: Don’t forget to tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 from noon to 3 pm on today. Guests: Bobby Holik (former New Jersey Devil, currently Holik on Hockey), Corey Pronman (ESPN).

Jets & Affiliate news:

icethetics: Top 10 worst NHL logos of all time. The Jets represent the 10th worst logo (coincidentally the Thrashers were 9th) according to icethetics, which has focused on the aesthetics of hockey for a number of years. It is clearly the author’s personal opinion but where would you rank the Jets logo?

TSN: Gregoire, Mouillerat each score as IceCaps edge Bulldogs. A strong goaltending performance by Mark Dekanich, who stopped 26 shots, led St. John’s to the road victory. Winnipegger Jason Gregoire got the ball rolling for the IceCaps who had endured a 7 hour bus ride to Hamilton. The game was televised last night and it was good to be able to watch the Jets AHL affiliate.

Reporter Herald: Ugly still wins for Colorado Eagles. They may have lost the 2 best scorers in the ECHL, but don’t tell the Eagles that they are not going to be able to compete. Once again they pulled out the victory, their 7th in 9 games in the month of December.

CBA news:

CBC: Don Cherry says NHL will be back in January. I 100% agree with him. Of course I also said there would be hockey by US Thanksgiving so take that with a grain of salt.

Globe and Mail: Players hand union leadership the mandate to decertify. No they gave the union a mandate to continue posturing. The expectation is the union will wave this around in the air as a possible consequence of NHL inaction but end of the day, both sides will get deal done and this mandate will remain in Fehr’s back pocket.

National Post: A look at what the union’s mandate to dissolve really means. While the vote was overwhelming in favour of granting the union the right to dissolve, you always wonder who these dissenting voices are.

NHL news:

National Post: Canada’s Spengler Cup team gets gift from lockout. If the lockout remains ongoing the Canadians might have a good chance of reclaiming the Cup for the first time since 2007.

World Juniors:

Globe and Mail: Team capsules. Taking a look at what each team has done over the past 5 tournaments, predicted order of finish and players to watch.

Toronto Star: To Russia, with no love lost. That is going to be one interesting plane ride. Although the plane back home once the tournament is over might be the most interesting of all.
