Better defence...Bruins or the Leafs?

Who has the better defence group going forward, the Bruins or Leafs?

I've been arguing this with a certain poster on the Leafs board lately, and he seems to think that the Leafs have better defencemen on their team. I need an unbiased opinion because I'm not sure I'll find that on the Leafs board so here goes.

This is what the Leafs have

Phaneuf - Gunnar
Gardiner - Liles
Franson - Komisarek

Top prospect: Morgan Rielly

Bruins have:

Chara - Seidenberg
Ference - Boychuk
McQuaid - Hamilton

Top prospect: Torey Krug

I don't know the stats all that well on defence so who do you think has the better defence now and perhaps going forward a few seasons?

Until Chara retires this is a non-debate.

It's chara AINEC the rest is irrelevant, however take Phaenuf and chara out and its the Leafs quite easily IMO.

In terms of current roster, Bruins AINEC. In terms of youth/prospects, Leafs AINEC.

Still, it would be silly to say that the Leafs with their current shallow defense have a better defensive core than one of the most effective defenses in the league. Potential is nice, but having a strong defensive core today that was very instrumental in a Stanley Cup win is much better. I have high hopes for the Leafs defense 2-3 years from now, but you gotta go with the group that has already proven they can win.

As of today I would say the Bruins based on what they have done. However going forward into the future I would say it's the Maple Leafs based on their prospects like Morgan Rielly, Stuart Percy and Matt Finn, along with top young Defensman like Jake Gardiner.

I am guessing who ever was arguing on the basis of "going forward" is looking 3-4 years from now rather then right now. If that's the case you can make an argument that the leafs are better off long term, but short term until Chara's play starts declining it's a non issue who is better(if I am correct he is almost 36 now)
