Chicago Reaches 500!! (Homicides)

****.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2...-tragic-number

My favorite part from the article:

Quote:
While saying every homicide is unacceptable, he went on to laud the department’s overall crime reduction.

He also said that gang violence reduction strategies the department adopted this year have slowed the increase in violence
My part of the story:

January: Windows smashed out in my minivan, nothing stolen.

June: Witnessed a blaze of bullets a block away (at least 5 people and 25+ rounds fired) from where I was riding my bike (two blocks from my house) in an empty parking lot.

August: Called the police when thieves were sawing out catalytic converters from Uhaul trucks at 4am outside my window.

November: Left home with the dog on a Saturday afternoon and my apartment was robbed in broad daylight, $3,000+ of things stolen.

And, of course, Christmas Eve was blessed with shots fired down the block.

I get a feeling this "crime is down" thing is B.S.

Yeah, I've been here almost four years now and never had any problems up until this past year. The GF has me pick her up from the bus stop now

The homicides appear to be in mostly very specific neighborhoods but the crime is pretty much in every part of town.

I've been living in Australia since mid-2010, but when I left the U.S. the violence was generally confined to specific areas and was quite insulted from nicer parts of Philly and South Jersey.

I can say it's pretty shocking when you read about raids in gang houses sandwiched in between million dollar homes, happens pretty often here. Selling crack and robbing houses seems to be pretty lucrative as of late.

Its different in places like Chicago, Denver and LA, because violence is more gang related, compared to places like Philly. There are a lot of areas that aren't traditional inner city areas that have a lot of gang violence. Especially in LA. Some really nice neighborhoods have a lot of violence.

I thought allowing the state to monitor our every move would make us safer?

no, the part I'm perplexed about is "allowing the state to monitor our every move"

if you had left your dog home with a gun, the thieves would've moved on to easier prey

Not one mention of the fact that Chicago has just about the most strict gun controls laws in country in this thread?

Guess that doesn't fit the emotional overreaction agenda.

Only if Chicago was shut off from the rest of the country via a huge glass dome, ala "The Simpsons Movie", would this be a relevant point.

Do tell.

What's to stop people from buying/stealing guns from the rest of unregulated, gun crazy America and bring them into Chicago?

Obviously too much Grand Theft Auto and Mass Effect. You're practically training them.

I blame big buck hunter. I played it over the weekend with a friend who was back from the Marines and he schooled my ass. Clearly he has been training.

Gotta keep those criminal defense lawyers employed somehow. Can you imagine what the world would be like without lawyers?
