Trevor Kidd was an awesome goalie at that point. Thought to be "can't miss". Won a Memorial Cup with Spokane, as well as winning WJHC gold in '91. Felix Potvin was his back-up.
The '92 team was a disaster, Kidd played every game, but like everyone else on the team, he was a disappointment.
To be fair to Hockey Canada, NHL teams in 1990 thought Kidd was better than Brodeur. Was higher ranked heading into draft, and picked 11th, Brodeur going 20th.

Fair enough for 91, but who was the backup in 92?

Mike Fountain, I believe.
Don't think he played a minute though. It was all Kidd, all the time.

Won silver. (In)famously turned over the puck that gave USA the winning goal.
EDIT: USA not Russia.

Manny Legace was the starter for Team Canada and a backup who did see a few playoff minutes when the Red Wings won the Cup in 2002.

not as surprising when you consider the unpredictability of goalie prospects. I think the next hope for a cup win with a gold medal winner would be Carey Price.... ugh

Was going to come on here just to say Legace.
The single greatest performance ever by a Canadian goalie at the WJC's.

Yeah he was amazing. Even though he let in 4 goals against Sweden he was a beast in that game winning it for Canada

Stephane Fiset won a WJC gold in 1990 and got a Cup ring as a backup in 1996.
