J.C. Lipon 1st round bound?

In your opinion, will he be a 1st rounder? This is his last draft year, as he is entering as a 20 year old.

If not, what round do you think a team will draft him?

Tanner Pearson was drafted 30th overall as a 20 year old last draft.

I'd take him over Pearson (and I did....in my keeper league), so yeah, I think a team might use a 1st on him....but very late (25th - 30th)

I know that most overagers put up huge numbers in their final year of junior, but unlike most of those 5'8" 160 pounders, Lipon has average NHL size at 6' 180lbs.

I'm surprised he wasn't picked last year...even with a 7th rounder. Almost a point per game production and also over 100 PIMs while maintaining a high plus/minus.

At worst he becomes a 3rd liner while providing some grit and the occasional offense (15 goals - 30 pts) but I think his high end is closer to 25 goals - 50 pts on the 2nd line in the NHL.

No. He doesn't exactly scream upside pick with his offensive ability (not saying he doesn't have any). IMO he'll be a good/solid 3rd liner, just doesn't have the upside to justify a 1st round selection. Good, safe pick in almost any other round though...

Not at all.

His high end potential is that of a 3rd liner.

I don't think he will, especially not in this years draft class.

Then again it only takes one team to have him be real high on their board with a lot of other guys they wanted gone.

If Alexandre Mallet could be taken in the second, then so could Lipon. I'd probably take him in the late 2nd easily.

True! I still cannot believe he was selected at all, let alone in the second round. What was Vancouver thinking with that pick?

He's so bad haha, but then again that is in comparison to the cream of the crop at the WJC.
Maybe 3rd round?

mid 2nd to early 3rd.

I hope we win the draft lottery, select the BPA at the time, and pick up Lipon with our 3rd... If it was a snake draft, our 2nd to Montreal won't hurt as much.

He was invited to the Avs training camp before the lock out, what would happen if there's a season this year? Can the Avs still sign him? I guess it depends on the CBA right?

I'd say 3rd liner is what he'll become if he reaches his potential. I wouldn't use a 1st round pick on him, I doubt he ever becomes an NHL regular to be completely honest.

His NHL upside is at best a 3rd line defensive forward, so no...I don't see a team using a first on him. More of a third round kind of guy, IMO.

3rd-6th round. His pro upside is a 3rd line checking/energy winger and he is not that big to fill out that role. I cant see him scoring much in the AHL let alone the NHL..

He's been Canada's worst player by far and literally hasn't done anything. Best I would do is 5th round pick for him.

Tanner Pearson is doing really well on a line with Linden Vey and Tyler Toffoli. They are Manchester Monarchs right now!

Stats for Pearson:

I think LA has a few gems that are gonna give them a lot of forward depth in the coming years.

I honestly wouldn't pick him in the first 3 rounds.

He's not worth a pick or a contract, IMO. His NHL upside is quite limited, again, IMO. He hasn't impressed me once anytime I've seen him (SSS, CanEvCamp, WJC).. just a waste of a pick and/or contract if you draft/sign Lipon.

Extensive list of viewings to come to that conclusion.

What I don't get is that 3rd line upside is his max potential. he's a scoring forward in the WHL, I don't see why a tenacious player like him, with enough drive couldn't attain a top 6 spot in the NHL some day.

He's not a lock for it, but we always say development isn't linear, right. There are many players who have been drafted and signed over the years with the same sort of tag you're hanging on Lipon that had 'similar upsides' or worse and became top 6 forwards in the NHL.

I wouldn't touch him in this draft in the top two rounds(has alot to do with this drafts depth), but making those assessments from only watching what you listed is silly IMO.

I thought he would have been taken late last year, and then instead of hate on this site for being passed over, he'd be a 'hyped' late bloomer. It's pretty typical hfboards, really.
