Shayne Gostisbehere: The Leading Dutchmen

The Flyers made a solid pick with Shayne and it's paid off this season.

His last name sounds like an illiterate toothless man who thinks his house is haunted.

It'll pay off IF he ever plays in the NHL. He seems to be coming along but his size doesn't exactly thrill me as an NHL defenceman. It's only a 3rd rounder, but it'd be nice if something other than a 1st would start actually paying off for the Flyers.

Flyers aren't quite like the Devils or Red Wings when it comes to drafting. That being said, this pick looks to relatively solid. Ryan Ellis is also tiny, but he's done well so far in his short NHL career. Size isn't as big a deal any longer, I don't think.

I don't know. Size may not be as much of a factor with forwards as it once was, but with D I think its pretty important. Ellis is basically a pp specialist. He's certainly not the guy you throw on the ice when it's 1-1 in the 7th game of a playoff series. Though I will admit for a 3rd rounder I much prefer Gostibehere to Klotz.

With the rash of Flyers injuries to the defense, perhaps they should sign Gostisbehere :p

I really wouldnt call Shayne tiny as he is going to be right there in height when he turns pro...he is nearly 6'0 right now...he needs to put on some pounds, but he likely sticks at least another year in college and that is where these guys start to really bulk up a bit more in the weight room...he has a very bright future ahead of him.

and though I agree that size is important on the blueline, we are seeing more and more examples of players making it that arent the traditional norm of dmen..the league is continually evolving and Shayne is a player that can easily find a home with his size...

and if you need proof of that, just turn on a Chicago Blackhawks game and watch Nick Leddy play. People laughed their ***** off the last 2 years at him being an NHL regular at 5'11 175lbs...well, I think its safe to say he has proved them wrong as he now logs around 18 minutes a night plus in all situations and is playing awesome two-way defense. dont pigeon-hole these players, for every Pronger there is an opposite that can make it and do extremely well. I have to imagine Leddy is a name being considered bigtime for the US Olympic camp next year due to his skating and puck moving ability and of course him not being a liability in his own zone.
