Patriots’ new deal with Tom Brady will free up $15 million worth of salary-cap space in the 2013 and 2014 off-seasons.

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter
Patriots picked up $8 million in cap room this year, $7 million in cap room next off-season. Tom Brady helps NE win even in February.

What does this mean for Welker?

- QB Ryan Mallett was put on the trade block by the Pats after Brady extension.

- TE Gronk had another surgery last week for an infection for his broken forearm. 3rd surgery on that arm since mid-November.

Gronk really needs to cut the partying in half, heal up for next season..

Didn't Sanchez get a 3 year/40 million dollar extension last year?

Why does an infection in his broken arm mean he was partying?

Because he keeps going out and doing stupid things like bodyslamming friend on dance floor while having broken forearm (And landing on it)

Serious repsect for Tom Brady. He could have taken 15 million a season and that would be doing the team a favour. Instead, he takes 9 million. That's simply amazing.

With the newfound cap space, the Pats need to address their secondary. Ed Reed would look nice in a Pats uniform.

They don't need Welker either. With Hernandez and Gronk, they already have 2 receivers clogging up the middle of the field. They could use another outside threat opposite Lloyd, however.

It doesn't matter if that's how he got an infection. If he is doing that (I have no idea if he is) then he's an idiot and the Pats should rightly be pissed off at him and tell him to knock it the hell off.

They can pay Welker now and probably chase a free agent or 2.

Know who would look good in Atlanta?

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/89...-void-contract

Steven Jackson's record-setting career with the St. Louis Rams could be coming to an end.

Jackson, the Rams' career rushing leader, plans to void the final year of his contract to become a free agent March 12, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Monday.

Tom Brady is a legend

But it's okay cuz his wife is an A list model. And so is he. He'll collect his discounted salary back from endorsements

I did not know that. Ok... I am with you guys now, haha. I just assumed Gronk was smart enough to rest up, rehab, get into better shape then he has ever been and be ready to rip it up! ****ing guy... can't he just call up that porn broad and get her to come over to his place to hang out?

Gotta love the Brady extension. Definitely gives the Pats some much needed room.

Don't be surprised if Brandon Lloyd is cut soon.

Or the $30M signing bonus his new contract included.

Forgot to put the article.

http://nesn.com/2013/02/report-brand...atic-behavior/

Quote:
When the Patriots signed Brandon Lloyd during the 2012 offseason, they gave themselves an out heading into 2013 by including an option bonus. The Patriots are now expected to use that out. Greg Bedard of The Boston Globe wrote Tuesday that “odds are against Brandon Lloyd’s $3 million option bonus being picked up.” Bedard cited “erratic behavior in the locker room and on the practice field” as a reason the Patriots may not choose to bring back the wideout. Lloyd has been known for his hot and cold demeanor his entire career.
Probably a reason he has been on 6 teams in 10 years.

That bonus is part of the deal he signed, it's not on top of what he will earn over the next 5 years (including current deal and the extension).

Oh, gotcha. Article I read made it sound like it was $27M over 3 years + $30M in bonuses.

But I also don't have a clue how this ****ing cap works, and understand it less and less the more I try to understand it.

As far as I have been led to understand it is that Guaranteed money(27mil in this case) is essentially your "bonus". It is spread out evenly across the duration of the contract, in this case all 27mil of Brady's deal is guaranteed money. Plus I guess an extra 3mil still on the books from his last deal I guess? Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I could be way off, but that has been my understanding of it for a while.

As for Jackson’s future, the Falcons quickly have arisen as the leader in the clubhouse for his services. With Michael Turner facing a likely release, Atlanta could soon find itself in need of a reliable, versatile back, and Jackson certainly fits the bill there.

I don't believe that's accurate.

What your describing is a signing bonus. So say Player Bob gets a signing bonus of $30M for a 6 year deal. That $30M is spread across the 6 years equally. Regardless of if the player is on the roster, for that period, $5M of the cap will be tied up due to the signing bonus.

Guaranteed money is different. It is money that is given to the player regardless. So Player Bob will get 10M throughout his 6 year deal if he is on the roster(IIRC on the last part). The rest of the contract may be things like as workout bonus, roster bonus, incentives etc etc.

A players caphit is basically Signing bonus + Base salary for that year(based on other things).

"Major discount"

He'll actually make more in the next two years now and it's all guaranteed. Then they'll just re-do his contract again so he'll get a lot more than $9M/yr. Praise the Patriots' capologists and accountants, not Brady.
