EDM gives up the two most valuable pieces in this deal. They have no reason to do so. Smyth provides their young team some leadership and that 1st coud still be quite high and is worth more than any piece coming back. Not a chance they do this and unlike you said, this deal doesn't in any way speed up Oilers' re-build.
Caron is good prospect but it's premature calling him a 3rd liner in NHL. Besides Oilers have better player in Teemu Hartikainen to take that role.
Yakupov has Zharkov if he wants a teammate from Subway series\WJHC..
Khokhlachev looks like a very solid prospect but his lack of size and 2-way play doesnt make him any better than what we have in Gagner.
The way you described Smyth makes the idea of this offer very tempting, especially with that almighty Oilers first round pick. But in the end, prying Koko from the Bruins would take a lot more than 2-3 seasons of Smyth, who won't be traded anyway. I'm not very high on Caron at all though, so if the offer was something close to a one-for-one swap of Smyth and Caron (Bruins probably add draft picks as I imagine overpayment would be needed) I'd pull the trigger.
Bruins have one of the better locker rooms in terms of people who can lead and its already a very experienced group. Having Smyth to play on the third line instead of Caron doesnt make the Bruins appreciably better in my opinion. Shipping Koko away for a prospect that would be drafted in 2014 and might be NHL ready by 2016 also makes no sense.
We couldn't take on Horcoff for salary reasons. We take on 4.4m in this deal(Horcoff's 5.5 reduced by Caron's 1.1), that's more than Savard's LTIR, and we need the space when Thomas goes for Seguin, Lucic, and Marchand's raises. He's signed for another 3 years, too. We need money if we want to re-sign Horton, too.

I think of Edmonton is dealing a 1st round pick, which it should, it would be getting back an NHL defenseman, not F prospects they don't have any room for.
Put me down for zero interest from the oil side. Khokhlachev is a fine prospect, but despite him and Yak playing together I actually see little chemistry between the two. In fact, I think this is the reason neither has looked very good in the tournament thus far, yet their coach continues to roll the same lines. Smyth wouldn't want to stray too far from home, and Boston would likely seek a cheaper option if he's going to be stuck in a bottom 6 role. While the Oil should compete for a playoff spot in 2014, I'd still rather not peddle the pick short of an impact trade. This does not qualify.

Just thought something with Khokholachev and Smyth and tried to even it out. Also kind of think the Oil should move their 2014 1st rounder and put themselves in a position where they have to compete.
Smyth isn't being moved and Edmonton sure as hell isn't trading a 1st rounder to do so. None of the B prospects are worth our 1st. None of the prospects or picks are worth Smyth straight up. Something doesn't add up.
Too hard to know where Edmonton would be picking in 2014 for me to do it. That pick would have to be pretty high because even a mid first rounder in 2014 is so far off the Bruins are better with Khokhlachev. And there is little incentive for Edmonton in this deal anyway, not getting anything they need.
Seidenberg is one of the most underrated d-men in the league and Whitney can't seem to stay healthy despite the fact that he certainly can put up some decent points. If we could sign him for cheap in free agency (don't know if he'd like the hometown team pressure) I'd gladly welcome him aboard but there isn't a chance in hell we'd give up Seidenberg for him.
I'd love to have Whitney on the B's but not at the price of seidenberg.
What about Theo Peckham? What would he cost the B's? I've liked him for quite some time and think he'd be an upgrade at the 6/7 over Krug/Johnson/Exelby.

It's hard to really know actually. He's extremely good on the PK and one of our few scrappers. If he plays like last year, probably a 3rd or a B prospect. If he can progress like we're hoping it'll take a lot more

No chance. Ryan Smyth is washed up and overpaid. Caron is cheaper and arguably more effective than an over the hill Smyth. And Boston certainly can't be giving up roster forwards for draft picks. They are tight against the cap and at the ment don't have the depth for a forward to step in on the 3rd line where Caron will be playing.
