on the topic of Mantha:

Quote:
-A couple of observations from the early stages of the Quebec League playoffs. First off, let us begin by saying that Val-d'Or winger Anthony Mantha is a first-round talent - no question. However, if we were drafting, say… 24th overall and Mantha was the highest rated player left on our board when it came time to make the pick? Well, let's just say we would somehow manage to find someone else we liked just a little bit better.

Honestly, does this guy even have a pulse? He plays with absolutely zero fire or passion and, as we like to say: If he ain't scorin', he ain't helpin'.

At a little more than 6-3, 200 pounds with great hands, you would think teams would be lining up to take him in the top 10. And we honestly do believe that he could become a 30-goal scorer at the NHL level. But it would be the softest 30 goals in the history of goaldom. And somebody in your organization along the way would have to teach him how to at least spell the word "compete," because it's absolutely certain at this stage that he has no clue about the meaning of that word.

We've already got a few guys that are highly skilled that have motor/defensive issues. I say we look elsewhere than Duclair.

Yeah, I agree. Kinda reminds me of AA with the issues and the size and speed thing.

With the way the prospect pool is shaking up, I hope the Wings swing for the fences and take chances on guys that might blow up.

So...pick 18 if (when) we lose Wednesday? That's a decent pick.

Yup, 18th. Last time Detroit got a pick that high... Jakub Kindl #19, 2005.

ISS just published their TOP30 list. I made my own mock draft about this.

3 Drouin, Jonathan C 3/27/1995 L 5.10.75 185 Halifax QMJHL
--> 3rd pick, Tampa Bay

Then comes Red Wings. Could this Fredrick Gauthier be the answer to get a big sized centerman. 6'5 huge "Gaustad" guy with some better production?

18 Gauthier, Frederik C 4/26/1995 L 6.05 210 Rimouski QMJHL

Quote:
Frederik Gauthier My first live viewing of Gauthier, and his game did not leave the descriptions out there for him and my initial thoughts via Telus Webcast. Gauthier skates well with powerful acceleration, but lacks co-ordination and his turns seem a little laggy. Seems to like being the last man in offensively and first man back on the forecheck, which is a bit of trade-off considering how dominant he could be low on the boards offensively. He possesses a powerful shot that he had trouble controlling through the game. Takes great positions defensively always staying between the puck carrier and the net.
19 Zykov, Valentin RW 5/15/1995 R 6.00 210 Baie-Comeau QMJHL
20 Rychel, Kerby LW 10/7/1994 L 6.01 200 Windsor OHL

22 Bowey, Madison RD 4/22/1995 R 6.00.75 200 Kelowna WHL
23 Mantha, Anthony LW 9/16/1994 L 6.04 190 Val-d'Or QMJHL
24 Compher, JT C 4/8/1995 R 5.10.5 184 USA Under-18 NTDP
25 Domi, Max C 3/2/1995 L 5.09.25 193 London OHL
26 Petan, Nic C 3/22/1995 L 5.08.5 163 Portland WHL
27 Heatherington, Dillon LD 5/9/1995 L 6.03 196 Swift Current WHL
28 McCarron, Michael RW 3/7/1995 R 6.05 228 USA Under-18 NTDP
29 Bigras, Chris LD 2/22/1995 L 6.00.5 189 Owen Sound OHL
30 Morin, Samuel LD 7/12/1995 L 6.07 200 Rimouski QMJHL

Would rather pick Zykov over Gauthier, and I haven't even watched them play, only highlights. Gauthier may be the more safe pick with a "guaranteed nhl future" but Zykov have higher point producing upside.

I'm 98% sure that Edmonton takes Monahan at 7th if he's still out there.

That would make me so happy. I'd be interested to know what it would take to make that happen.

Saw the above. Change Nyquist to Tatar and I would be tempted.

i'd be worried stevie takes barkov with the number 3 pick, and i don't want to give up all that for drouin. unfortunately, we're in a division with florida and tampa now so i don't think there's a deal to be made.

Not worth of it. The value of Sproul has already risen to a TOP3 pick.

Gauthier sounds a hell of a lot like Sheahan. I can't decide if that is a good thing or a bad thing. My money also says that at 18, the BPA will be a defensemen.

That's a bad thing, wings need a player that will play in the top6 in the future, Sheahan is absolute best case scenario a solid third line center

Maybe, but this draft is not very deep with defencemen at 1st round after Jones. Of course I would like to get someone like Ristolainen, if he falls that far, but our biggest need in current prospects that have developed some years already are big sized centers. He have very good defensive prospects corps right now. We could really go this draft with taking only forwards tbh.

Drafting a physically ready center now, he would catch those physically immature older prospects faster and at same time, and that would build an organizational peak.

I'd be okay with Gauthier but if Domi is still on the board he is who I'd want us to pick, or if we do pick a D Theodore/Morrissey are the guys I'd like to see. Domi fits the Wings mold & based on just offensive potential he's top 10 in the draft.

Based on my limited viewings of him, I find it hard to predict Gauthier being more than a 3rd liner in the NHL. I just don't see much offensive upside in him.

Looking at the forwards around him, I'd pick Zykov ahead of Gauthier pretty much any day. If you want to go full high risk/high reward, you take Pavel Buchnevich. Wennberg/Horvat would be a great pickup if they fall.

I think Buchnevich is best left for a 2nd or even a 3rd round pick. He is quite the intriguing prospect but I've not read anything about him wanting to come over any time soon. I'd rather we take someone with similar talent but a lot less of a flight risk. However if he's there at our 3rd I hope we snatch him up.

Yeah, I don't really expect him to go in the 1st but in terms of talent he's a first rounder. I would probably take him with the #48, though.
