I'm not name-calling. I am characterizing our discussion. These are the names that have been used in these threads about gun control. Change the words in your head.

Quotation marks

Argue against the post.

I didn't know "pro-choice" was a bad word.

For the record, I find "anti-gun" to be as gross a mischaracterization as "gun nut", but the latter certainly sounds worse. I honestly didn't even think about it and equated the terms.

You are cordially invited to... *drumroll*

Gun Appreciation Day!
January 19, 2013

http://gunappreciationday.com/

Quote:
OK, mark the date, for it will surely spark an outcry in the gun-control community. A coalition of gun rights and conservative groups have declared Jan. 19 to be “Gun Appreciation Day” and are urging Americans nationwide to visit local gun ranges and purveyors to show support for the Second Amendment. Yes, the date falls two days before President Obama’s second inauguration, and yes, organizers say “Gun Appreciation Day” is expected to rival “Chick-fil-A Day” as a public statement of protest against government policies.
BYOG

Edit: I just noticed that if this becomes an annual thing, it will fall on MLK Day in 2015.

So does a "gun advocate" (is that better?) wanna take a stab and explain to us all why they complain that "gun-control advocates" (better) focus only on gun control and not the comprehensive situation when it is the "gun advocates" who undermine the particulars in that comprehensive situation?

Anyone?

If you don't like the US's gun laws, don't come here...and you won't be affected.
You don't need to be from America to have an opinion here. It's pretty obvious that if the foreigners were agreeing with you, you wouldn't be trying to shut them down in the debate.

Yeah it's much better to make highly intellectual arguments like "don't like the gun laws, don't come here."

You don't have an opinion on how Saudi Arabia treats women? Or how Israel treats Arabs in the occupied territories? Or how the North Korean regime treats its people? You don't live there, so it's none of your business and you don't feel you should be able to express an opinion on it?

I'm sure Papaspud would welcome this Aussie's contribution to the thread:

That seems rather excessive and an overreaction, eh?

The next thing you know a teachers' pension fund will be divesting its interest in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd.

It's the slippery slope, I am warning you.

What really chaps my buttocks is these uninformed self-proclaimed experts trying to push gun control.

Like this guy...
Former Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who led the war in Afghanistan, endorsed strong gun control laws Tuesday on Morning Joe.

“I spent a career carrying typically either an M16 or an M4 Carbine. An M4 Carbine fires a .223 caliber round which is 5.56 mm at about 3000 feet per second. When it hits a human body, the effects are devastating. It’s designed for that,” McChrystal explained. “That’s what our soldiers ought to carry. I personally don’t think there’s any need for that kind of weaponry on the streets and particularly around the schools in America.”
...
“We’ve got to take a serious look—I understand everyone’s desire to have whatever they want—but we’ve got to protect our children, we’ve got to protect our police, we’ve got to protect our population,” McChrystal said. “Serious action is necessary. Sometimes we talk about very limited actions on the edges and I just don’t think that’s enough.”
...
“The number of people in America killed by firearms is extraordinary compared to other nations, and I don’t think we’re a bloodthirsty country,” he said. “We need to look at everything we can do to safeguard our people.”

Men armed with rifles walk through Portland to 'educate'

The men were disappointed when people kept calling the police on them.

Quote:
Warren said he hoped people would approach them and talk to them, instead of calling police.

"What they really should do is observe the person to determine if the person is aggressive," he said of seeing someone with a gun in public. "We're not doing anything threatening to anyone."
I know when I see two strange guys walking around with rifles on their backs, I like to approach and make small talk.

It seems MOAR GUNZ may not be the answer.
Mr. Ratliff’s passion for firearms made him something of a celebrity on the Internet, where he helped make scores of videos about high-powered and exotic guns and explosives. His YouTube channel, called FPSRussia, became the site’s ninth largest, with nearly 3.5 million subscribers and more than 500 million views.

But last week, the authorities said, Mr. Ratliff, 32, ended up on the wrong end of a gun. The police in northeast Georgia found him dead at his office on Jan. 3, shot once in the head. He was surrounded by several guns, but not the one that killed him. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is treating it as a homicide.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/11/us...-to-death.html

As he posted after the Aurora, Col theatre shooting:

“For him not to pull out that gun and try to defend himself, he had to feel comfortable around somebody,” his wife, Amanda, told a television channel in Lexington, Ky., where he used to live.

And that is the usual situation - it is not some nefarious sneaky criminal but most likely someone you know or to whom you are related that ends your life surrounded by your weapons of self-defence and deterrence.

Keith Ratliff loved guns. He built his own rifles. He kept bullets in his car’s cup holder. And on the rear window he slapped a sticker of the Starbucks Coffee mermaid firing two pistols.

“I ♥ Guns and Coffee,” it read.
Sounds like Vtwin.

Glad right now that I live in Austria. It seems the gun lunacy in the U.S. is currently reaching fever pitch.

Can't we just let Jesusland secede already so that the sane states can shed the dead weight and start focusing on the future?

Is the fifth amendment still good or does that one need to be "modernized" too?

Nothing's being modernized. Even the most conservative douchebag on the Supreme Court says the Second Amendment doesn't protect Bushmasters.
