Ooh, is that resentment I sense?

You seem to be an angry guy in general, so it would make sense.

AP Enterprise: Nixon wished for total handgun ban

Quote:
"I don't know why any individual should have a right to have a revolver in his house," Nixon said in a taped conversation with aides. "The kids usually kill themselves with it and so forth." He asked why "can't we go after handguns, period?"

Nixon went on: "I know the rifle association will be against it, the gun makers will be against it." But "people should not have handguns." He laced his comments with obscenities, as was typical.

Nixon made his remarks in the Oval Office on May 16, 1972, the day after a would-be assassin shot and paralyzed segregationist presidential candidate George Wallace. As president, Nixon never publicly called for a ban on all handguns. Instead, he urged Congress to pass more modest legislation banning Saturday night specials, which were cheaply made, easily concealed and often used by criminals.
It's true, Nixon would be considered a pinko socialist today. What would Archie Bunker think about that?!

I'm no expert on Nixon, but didn't he also propose a far more progressive health care plan than Obamacare and establish the EPA? Would he really be a Republican in today's GOP?

One of my creative ideas was to say we are arming all the schoolteachers but secretly instead of giving them real guns give them fake guns or water pistols that look like real guns. There will be no accidents and it will deter the nutters from going to the schools if they think the teacher have guns. And if they did go to a school the teachers could corner them with their fake guns and they might surrender.

It sounds stupid but it might work. Of course it would be exposed eventually, but think of the number of school shootings that would be prevented.

Thank you. Of course, it's not a serious idea and the government can't just lie. But it deters shooters from going to schools while at the same time keeping the kiddies safe from accidents. Win win.

Changing the world, one nonserious win-win idea at a time.

Ummm no. He escalated US into Vietnam, had high intrest rates/inflation etc and cared more for foreign affairs than domestic among other disasters. Nobody can look past the only US President to resign.

You're from canada so "great" to you means a Molson 6 pack and a hockey game.

There are a couple of problems with that idea (assuming there's no trained, responsible armed guard presence):

1. What if the assailant doesn't care if the teacher is holding a fake gun? Most of these kinds of rare but horrible massacres end in the attacker committing suicide-by-cop. A teacher begging the attacker to freeze/stop without actually being able to bring force to bear is not a good idea.

2. An attack only needs to happen once for word to get out that teachers aren't actually carrying, which brings us right back to where we are.

Now, let me be abundantly clear: I am NOT in favor of mandating that teachers are armed (if they decide to arm themselves voluntarily, then that's their choice, so long as they follow the law). If school security must be done, I'd much rather it be done by trained law enforcement.

Teachers should only worry about teaching their students.

I appreciate the spirit of the idea but I don't think putting a teacher in the path of an armed lunatic with a toy gun is practical.

What teachers should do is what most at Sandy Hook actually did, which is lock and/or barricade doors to their classrooms, call authorities and wait for help. Should that fail, I wouldn't be against a teacher being able to fire back assuming they are licensed to carry. I'm not saying arm every teacher, but if a teacher feels comfortable with it and can legally do so then I'm ok with it.

Arm the teachers, so the killer will just come in and kill the teacher first right? Who else can we arm..

Of course it isn't practical, but it's better than having nothing at all. The whole point of the idea is so they don't go to the school in the first place. Shooters target schools because they are easy targets, they know the teachers won't have guns on them, if they think the teachers have guns, they won't go there.

As someone said, and I originally acknowledged, it takes one attack for the idea to be exposed, but if it prevents 1, 2, maybe 5 other attacks then it's worth it, no? It's certainly better than doing nothing.

So after 1, 2 or 5 (assuming it works), then what? Are we back at square one?

Hopefully by then the mental health care improvements everyone is shouting for will have happened, and/or the gun culture of america declines so it is possible to properly implement gun control laws.

It isnt meant to be a long term solution, its just a silly idea I thought of

In an ideal world I think the gun laws in America should be the same as the UK. The gun nuts can still get a licence for a rifle to go to the range, clay pigeon shooting, or hunting. So they can't complain. Guns are pretty much outlawed except for purposes previously listed, and for special police units. We have very very low gun crime rates, and nearly all of it is gang-related.
