Marleau on target to eclipse Gordie Howe?

http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/ma...pse-mr-hockey/

Marleau has been healthy and durable in his career. Might he be able to surpass Gordie Howe in games played?

Marleau 1197 games played. 34 years old.

Howe 1767 games played.

573 more games for marleau? That would be another 7 full 82 game seasons to beat.

Now if the lockouts never happened, it'd be more interesting.

I don't see why he couldn't play into his 40s. Are there any rules against robotic limbs?

It doesn't sound all that unrealistic. His skillset is so that even when he stops being a great top-6er, he can still be a great bottom-6er. His size, skating, shot, PKing, and defensive ability will make him useful for longer than his scoring lasts, and by all accounts he's in phenomenal shape.

I figure, he's a top-6er for 3-4 more years, a 2nd liner for the later of them. Three-four years as a quality 3rd liner isn't all that unrealistic.

Nope. Those 2 lockouts robbed him of a realistic chance.

To bad howe never played his entire career in the nhl, his numbers would of been outrageous if he did.

If you add howes nhl and wha games howe played close to 2300 games of pro hockey.

Yep, Howe's non-NHL GP is insane.

I don't see 7 more full seasons, but he can surely move up that impressive list. Now add a cup and a couple hundred more goals...(150ish)

I think he had a chance if it wasn't for the two lockouts. Thats what, 120 games or so?

what about vlasic? obviously it all depends on health, but he's missed an average of less than 3 games per season since joining the team in 06'.. wouldn't he have the best chance other then PM?

I guess. I mean, you could say that for a lot of players, but Marleau might be the closest active player right now.
Thornton is only like half a season behind Marleau, Vlasic still has a ways to go, Cogliano hasn't even missed a game in his career yet.

but wasn't vlasic 18 entering the league whereas cogliano and other players were 20+? that's the only reason i thought vlasic had a shot.

Yeah Cogliano started 2 years after his draft (lock-out + an extra year). Vlasic entered the league when he was 19 (lock-out the year prior). I'd say Thornton has a higher chance on the Sharks than Vlasic only because he's played so much already, whereas Vlasic still has a long way to go. Probably other players in the league between Marleau and Thornton too, but I'm too lazy to check.

Vlasic entered the league in the 2006-2007 season.

I think Marleau has the best chance of anyone in the league to hit Howe's mark. Lifers like Doan, St. Louis, and Elias only hit 1000 semi-recently, and all are several years older than Marleau.

Woops, thought the lock-out was 05-06 for some reason.
Guess it isn't really a disadvantage since Marleau missed two lock-outs, and Vlasic missed one-year post draft and a lock-out. With his playstyle, Vlasic could play for a long while too.

Yeah I agree. I was just saying there might be players with a worse chance than Marleau, but a better chance than Thornton.

No doubt Vlasic is promising, as far as GP goes.

And yeah I'm too lazy but I'm sure there are guys up there.

04-05 - 82 + playoffs; 35 or so for 2012-13 missed games.

Marleau can do it. I wouldn't be surprised to see Marleau on the Sharks roster at 43
