Why do I get the feeling we'll end up needing a PART II for this thread?

What about Tallinder for Abdelkader or Helm?

I'd cream my pants if we could land someone like Helm but I doubt Holland would be stupid enough to trade a solid asset like that for a aging d-men. Helm is exactly the type of player you want on your team during the post season, he's worth wayyyyy more then your average bottom #6 forward IMO.

If they need a 2nd pairing D man maybe we could get them. Helm only played 14 mins last year and Abdelkader played 12 mins. Neither get many points.

Filppula intrigues me, he's a UFA that will require a raise so maybe Detroit will want to unload him. Detroit could use D but they aren't really in desperate need for one though.

We really don't need Helm. Franzen/Fillpula intrigue me though.

Darren Helm is a player I'd make room for. He's a stud bottom #6 player who's a beast on the PK and is money when the playoffs get underway. Franzen is a longshot and Filppula will most probably cost more then Tallinder alone.

If there's a lesson we all took from our cup run is that you need to have 4 balanced lines to go far in the post seson and Helm would just solidify our bottom 6.

Kings 4th line didn't play much. I think the lesson is the same as always, there are many ways to put together a successful team.

Helm is supposedly a great PKer and super fast. Could replace Parise on the PK unit.

If you don't think our 4th line had anything to do with our success, then I don't know what to tell you.

The Kings didn't utilise their 4th line as much but when you have a stacked top #9 like they did, you just need them once in a while I guess. We didn't, and presently don't, have that luxury.

Helm is a top 5 PK-er in the league, without question.

So you're saying teams definitely need to use their 4th line, even though the Kings don't.

I didn't say the Devils shouldn't roll 4 solid lines, I was saying this are no hard and fast rules or lessons on how a team needs to be assembled.

You NEED your 4th line to skate a competent shift when called upon. You don't need them to dominate like ours did in the playoffs, but if you're skating 3 guys looking to rough people up, you have a 0% chance of winning a Cup.

There's definitely number of ways to build a team, but you need to be able to have 4 competent lines and 3 competent D-pairs. How dominant you are at each position, line, and pairing is where the differences in winners are.

Kings 4th line played 8-10 a game against the Devils. So yes they did use their 4th line.

I looked at a few of the box scores, I saw a lot of 5-7 minute players.

A Kings' player was only under 7 minutes in a single game 4 times against the Devils. Gagne in game 3, Fraser and Nolan in Game 5, and Nolan in game 6.

8-10 minutes might have been an over estimation, more like 7-9. The 4th line did play over 10 minutes the first 2 games.

Games 1 and 2, both LA wins, they played about 12 minutes.

Game 3, an LA win, about 8 minutes.

Games 4 and 5, both LA losses, they played about 7 minutes.

Game 6, an LA win, about 7 minutes but the game was also a power play fest.

I want MacArthur if Clarkson feels the need to go home, and play. They won't keep MacArthur if they sign Clarkson.

I wouldn't mind trading for him now with all the cap space we have, but that's one more UFA to have to worry about next year. MacArthur probably won't wanna stay with the Leafs regardless.

The first 2 games were both OT games as well, so we need to take a little bit of time away from them for that.

They had 9 players, I think, play for under 8 minutes in the 4 games that didn't go to OT. That is not regular usage.

I like your thinking. I think Franzen would be easier to nab than Filppula, but it'll still cost a lot. Too much, odds are.

Ask a rental for Tallinder? I mean Tallinder is signed but we have so many defensemen in the pipes already that Losing Tallinder for the risk of resigning MacArthur isn't that bad.

D'agostini and Luke Adam from Buffalo are the two most enticing names to me, in regards to HF trade proposals at least.

I'd do either of those deals.

The days to follow the ratification of the CBA are going to be very, very interesting. I'm excited for it.
