What's most scary for me as a Penguins fan is how much ground Hershey has made up in a relatively short stretch of time. While we're almost at the 3/4 point of the season, it's impossible to say who will be where in this list. If I had to choose, however, I'd say that Hershey is the odd team out regarding 'talent'. Although in saying that, it is rarely the most 'talented' team that wins out in sport.

Hershey, excluding svatos and savage, has heart. Budaj is the team, as he goes so does the team and as of late he's been, absolutely brilliant.

Without a doubt the bears CAN make the playoffs. If svatos starts to step up his game and starts to play this thing called hockey the bears could make some waves. Right now the teams in front of them seem way out of their league, but hershey without a doubt has shown to me, as a big hershey hater, that they have the potential. Perrin has made big strides in his game this year. Brett Clark as well.

Watch for budaj, the numbers are far from glorious, but he is the only reason that team is near playoff competition.

Oh don't worry about it cause tomorrow Philadelphia is going to add a four point buffer.

Back when Therrien lambasted his players over their recent performance some people wanted his head on a silver platter. However, since his tirade the Pens have been downright scary. Sometimes it just takes a little fire under the ass to get some people going.

Well, the game against Hershey the other night wasn't their greatest moment, but other than that and some problems putting the puck in the net every now and then, they've been awesome since Therien lambasted them.

Did you see the game? Pens played pretty good, but budaj stood tall.

Whitney was VERY VERY VERY impressive.

What's funny was he was talking about the Hershey vs WB/S game. Notice how he said tomorrow, and the date of his post.

Wilkes-Barre takes two in a row against Philadelphia and moves into a tie for first.

Binghampton and WBS are tied atop with 75 points a piece. Binghampton has played 61 games, WBS has played 60.
Philadelphia and Norfolk are tied for third with 74 points a piece. Philly has played 60 games, Norfolk has played 62.

Hershey remains in fifth with 66 points in 61 games.

Whitney gets better every game. I'm not like some fans who feel he's only a small step down from J-Bo and Pitkanen, but I also think the people who say the best we can hope for is a Tom Poti clone are way out in left field. This kid is a definitely keeper.

He's not a mere step down from jbo and pitkanen. He's not on phaneuf, suter, or coburn's level either. I'd say he's probably something like mike green or weber, which is no disrespect. While he isn't the defensive stalwart those two are and plays a very different style he's the same place in terms of overall talent..i don't feel i explained it very well, but basically he's not a super star guy, but like green and weber he has all-star potential, ya thats what i want to say. Babchuk, tytuin, eminger, and grebeshkov are otehr good examples of his percieved potential, potential all-stars but no dominant game changing franchise guys.

I will give him this though, of all the defensemen i've seen in the AHL nobody has impressed me more with his passing then whitney. But at the same time, out of all the top fleet prospects i've seen i've been most worried with his play in one really key respect and thats physical play. He took a decent amount of hits, but really didn't try to come back and play gritty. He looked so soft on the ice and kind of coasted skating wise. I'm worried that this shows disintrest in him and that when he hits the NHL he's going to get pushed around and not fight back, which will make him a target. I'm hoping that he gets knocked down big time in the NHL and that leads to him developing an edge, thusly furthering his development.

But out of all the pens prospects whitney, duba, and chiodo are the three i'm really pulling for. And this is coming from a guy who really doesn't like the pens.

Whitney's physical game is definitely his biggest flaw at this point, and my only real concern.

It's such a cliche, but his physical game carries his defensive game. When he's banging and cross-checking and just being a pain in general his defense is usually perfect. When he's playing "containment" his defensive work seems to suffer the most. He's made upgrades in his size and strength and with that, hopefully, will come a nastier game. But you hear that so often about guys; "they'd be stars if they developed their physical games," and it often does not happen.

As of Monday, March 7, 2005

Ratio of points earned over points possible

WBS - .625
PHI - .617
BIN - .615
NOR - .597
HER - .541

That's how you spin it to put WBS on top. Indeed a tight race. It's been so tight for so long that it feels much later in the season. There's a good deal left to go.

O yeah, one thing i forgot to mention, which worries me much less as many young dmen do this, but he played the puck rather than the man, when i watched him. It doesn't worry me much cause lots of young dmen do this. But i think whitney, if he continues to do this at the NHL, will get burned a lot until he learns.

Why does WBS need Beech and Ouellet ? :-)

Just joking. I think they are two very good players and the Pens will need them in the playoffs. But a nice thing to watch is that now other players are playing phenomenal...such as Matt Hussey. He had 3 points last season, but 5 goals last week !!

It was also quite impressive how they won the two games against Philly (Shorthanded Goal with 3 mins left and the goal with 3 secs. left).

When i saw the pens there was one pens guy who really came out of no where and impressed me, Colby Armstrong, i don't know much about him, but he had a great two games. He had this awsome shot on budaj so twisted and he just played great all game.
