And some of the Caps fans are still downplaying his talent, which I find hilarious.

Also,

Neuvirth: Will be a very good backup goaler.
Holtby: Good prospect and his talent is probably a step below Varlamov's.

If you're guys' coaching was better and played Varlamov, than you would still have Varlamov (probably no Forsberg) and we would have Holtby.

It wasn't Boudreau's fault Varlamov would pull a groin if he started him several games in a row. As you saw with Hiller, he has no problem with riding a goalie for a long period of time.

I find it amusing that the only people bashing Varly in this thread are Washington fans.

I also find it amusing that the only critiques on him are consistency and health. To that I say how may 24 year old goalies are consistent in the NHL? Not many, he is just a kid he will learn. And he was healthy for a full season last year, so in my book if he has another healthy year then you can't really use that against him.

After searching the stats there isn't a goalie his age or younger that has done anything better than him, the only one that is comparable is the other Washington goalie Neuvirth and I'd say Varly has outplayed him.

BEFORE EJ arrived. Avs blueline isnt bad, theyre just young and lack the experience. They need a vet back there.

hmmm, .946 save percentage is impressive.

But you also have to consider that on the same team, Vitaly Kolesnik has a .930 S% while Curtis Sanford (yeah that guy) has a .925 S%, both after having played 13 games.

Looks like they're pretty good defensively.

They have enough vets, what they need is Tyson Barrie to be on the team.

Johnson was on the team before Varlamov. Johnson is also about three places ahead of every other defenseman on the team.

Oh damn. Varlamov, we could of kept you, instead we got Forsberg. Darn!

His consistency problem is understated. He made some spectacular saves against the Penguins and that's all anyone remembers, no one remembers how he let in devastating soft ones in games 4,5 and 7.

Wait, so you claim people are "bashing" Varlamov, and in your next sentence note that all anyone has done is mention his injuries or consistency. Your post is incoherent.

Varly's been healthy since he joined the Avs and as for consistency he started the season very strongly and finished the season in beast mode, he struggled in the middle of the season, but he's still just a kid in his first season as a fulltime starter. Steve could absolutely be as good as any other goaler in the league soon.

Basically what it comes down too at the end of the day. Guy is freakishly athletic, very entertaining to watch but always was injured during his time with the Capitals. So frustrating.

Yep, and he's one of the big reasons I think Colorado (not Minnesota or Edmonton) will be the biggest challenge to Vancouver's run of NW division titles.

Hejda and Zanon. O'Brien, O'Byrne and Hunwick aren't exactly young either.

Also how does Barrie suck? You can't be serious.

How often have you seen Barrie play? The guy is playing really well in the AHL.

True, but this is a highly regarded prospect who has played well in the AHL and WHL. Give me a reason as to why you think Barrie sucks.

He's been on fire for almost a year now.. I had a post last year that outlined his and Landeskog's performance since last all-star break til the end of the season (because they were the only reason the Avs were sniffing the playoffs).. i think his sv.% was around .929 if i'm not mistaken

add that to his gold medal World Championship performance posting a 8-0 record with a 1.77 GAA and .939sv%

and his current KHL stats.. not such a small sample size after all. Like it has been said, he needs to stay healthy but that hasn't been an issue since leaving Washington.
